Dog meat businesses ordered to halt operation due to spread of cholera
Due to the wide spread of cholera disease in the capital city of Hanoi, the Department of Health July 10 ordered dog meat businesses to shut down temporarily, in an effort to disinfect the environment.

The department has tested samples of raw vegetables, ice water and dog meat from business and dog meat processing centers in Hanoi?s Duong Noi Commune.

Tests confirmed that cholera bacterium was present in such samples. The department decided to halt operation of these establishments in order to spray chemicals.

The commune has 19 slaughterhouses and dog meat processing plants that supply restaurants with imported dog meat from Laos.

In the northern region, the choleric bacterium has been found present in fresh water sources in Bac Ninh and Hai Duong provinces and in Hanoi.

According to the Hanoi Preventive Health Department, of the 150 reported cases of cholera over the past month, over 60 percent of them involved patients that had to be hospitalized due to their consumption of dog meat, raw vegetables and shrimp paste.

Vietnam closed around 60 dog meat restaurants and slaughterhouses in outlying parts of the capital after cholera bacteria were found in two of the animals, a health official said Monday.

The businesses will be allowed to reopen in two weeks provided they are cholera-free and the owners can show their meat comes from hygienic sources, said Le Anh Tuan, director of the Hanoi health department.

Dog meat is a delicacy for many Vietnamese, who believe eating it in the second half of the lunar calendar month helps dispel bad luck.

The closure affects two rural villages where bacteria were found in samples taken from dogs, Tuan said, adding that the slaughterhouses did not have purchase receipts for the animals.

The city has recorded 150 human cholera cases in the past month, The Liberated Saigon newspaper reported.

Cholera hits 11 provinces, cities across Vietnam

Cholera cases have been reported in11 provinces and cities across Vietnam this year, deputy minister of health ministry Trinh Quan Huan said Sunday.

Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta provinces of Ben Tre and Bac Lieu are among the worst-hit localities, according to Huan.

He said most of the cases were related to poorly processed food and ice made with dirty water, without elaborating on the total number of cases.

Also on Sunday, Dr. Nguyen Nhat Cam from Hanoi?s Preventive Health Center said cholera patients have been recorded at 20 out of the capital's 28 districts.

City agencies have so far found cholera bacteria in dogs at slaughterhouses in Duong Noi Commune and another one in Hoai Duc District, according to Cam.

This prompted Hanoi on Friday to suspend all dog meat businesses in the commune of Ha Dong District for 10-15 days for inspections and sanitization, Vietnam News reported.

The acute intestinal infection, sometimes fatal without prompt treatment, ravaged northern Vietnam in 2008 and 2009, infecting hundreds of people each time.

Acute diarrhoea on rise in Ca Mau

Another three cases of vibrio cholerae have been diagnosed in Rach Goc town, Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province, raising the total number of patients with the virus to five, reported the provincial centre for preventive medicine.
On July 15, Ngoc Hien General Hospital received three patients suspected of having cholera. The provincial centre for preventive medicine took samples from them, which later tested positive for vibrio cholerae.

The patients are now isolated and being treated at the district hospital.

Ca Mau has had more than 2,500 cases of acute diarrhoea treated at its hospitals from the beginning of the year, most of them children.

In the face of a possible cholera outbreak, the provincial health department and Ngoc Hien district have worked together to raise public awareness of the issue and to take preventive measures such as spraying chemicals to disinfect contaminated areas, giving antibiotic to local inhabitants and treating water supplies that are used daily by local people.

The province is also encouraging people to adopt hygienic practices with food, and preparing medicine and medical staff for the worst possible scenario.

Acute diarrhoea spreads across southern provinces

The acute diarrhoea epidemic is spreading from far and wide in southern provinces, including Cau Mau, An Giang, Ben Tre and Can Tho City, according to the Department of Preventive Health and the Environment.
Nguyen Van Binh, vice director of the department, says that about 70 percent of the contracted cases show minor symptoms or none of any symptoms of the disease.

He said it is difficult to control the number of newly infected cases, as most of them are not hospitalised for clinical examinations.

Binh also warns that vibrio cholarae bacterium can be much detected in ice water, canals and even dog meat.

Acute diarrhoea has shown signs of waning in the northern region with no new cases reported over the past weeks.
