At the conference held by the National Steering Committee on Bird flu Prevention, health officials warned cold weather in winter was a ripe environment for H5N1 infections among poultry stocks.

In addition, Vietnam?s Tet holiday, set to take place in February, brings a traditionally high demand for poultry products, making for a dangerous scenario.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is conducting inspections on poultry smuggling at Lang Son northern border gate and would broaden investigations to all northern provincial borders.
In March 2007, the Health Ministry?s Animal Health Bureau is set to inoculate type-H5N9 vaccines on the nation?s geese stocks.

In the last 13 months, no new bird-flu outbreaks were found in Vietnam and to date some 140 million poultry nationwide have been injected with the anti-H5N1-virus vaccines.

The Health Ministry is updating information to timely react to emergencies concerning bird flu resurgence.

Bird flu has now been detected in more than 50 countries around the world and killed 154 people.

In Vietnam, 93 people have been infected by bird flu, with 42 fatalities reported since the disease first appeared in December 2003.
No new cases have been reported since November last year.
