Swine flu kills man in northern Vietnam

A 37 year-old man died of the swine flu last week in the northern province of Dien Bien, bringing the country?s total swine flue death toll to 58, the health ministry reported on Wednesday.

The man, whose identity wasn?t revealed, was admitted to Dien Binh General Hospital on January 22 with critical pneumonia and respiratory failure, according to the ministry?s Department of Preventive Health and Environment.

He was confirmed positive for the swine flu influenza A (H1N1) virus five days later by a test conducted at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Hanoi. He died last Thursday.

Since it was first detected here last May, swine flu had attacked 11,186 people and killed 58, according to the Ministry of Health.

Nguyen Tran Hien, head of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said results from ten observation stations nationwide showed that the ratio of H1N1-positive patients compared to the total number of people reporting flu symptoms had decreased to around three in every 100.

But H1N1 would be likely to spread during Vietnam?s traditional New Year Tet due to high travel rates, the ministry warned.

In the meantime, six provinces had were currently dealing with avian flu outbreaks, but no human cases of the virus have been reported so far this year, according to local health agencies.
