Nhan Dan Online ? From June 17 to July 19, 197 (one hundred and ninety seven) patients from Nam Dinh city and five districts of Nam Dinh province were reported to have been hospitalised with symptoms of acute diarrhea disease.
After that, 80 of them were tested positive to cholera and 10 of them were confirmed to be carring cholera bacteria.
Nghia Hung is a district with as many as 154 infected people. 50 of them were tested positive to the cholera bacteria.
13 cases suffering from acute diarrhea were found in Nam Dinh city, 7 of them were tested positive to the cholera bacteria.
The reasons for the fast spread of the epidemic are the heavily polluted rural environment, the unhygienic toilets in localities, a breading ground for flies to multiply and to be a carrier of germs of the disease.
The local authority is taking urgent measures to prevent the disease from spreading: spray chemicals to stamp out the epidemic, isolate and treat patients, mobilize local pupils and students to do the cleaning up of environment and call on people to eat well cooked food and drink boiled water.

VietNamNet Bridge ? Hundreds of cubic metres of human waste are suspected of being dumped into rivers daily because truck drivers don?t want to travel 40km to the waste treatment plant.
Inspectors of the city?s Transport Department recently reported catching drivers red-handed dumping excrement in Go Vap and Thu Duc districts.
Activities causing environmental damage would be strictly punished, said Nguyen Minh Hoang of the city?s People?s Council.
Truong Trong Nghia, a HCM City People?s Council?s member,said that the issue would be dealt with in the next two months. As the new waste treatment plant is double the distance of the old one from the city centre, some of the water could be discharged onto the streets, lakes or rivers along the way.
Le Tien Dung, the factory?s director, said that only 30 out of 130 trucks offering human waste disposal services actually go to the city Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Factory in Binh Chanh District.
The city?s Environment and Natural Resources Department regulates that companies offering human waste disposal services have to take the cargo to the waste treatment area.
Deputy director of the Environment and Natural Resources Department Nguyen Van Phuoc said that it was acceptable to take the waste to places other than the Da Phuoc treatment centre that meet technical requirement, although the deputy director did not list any alternative approved spots.
"Human waste carries dangerous germs and diseases. Dumping human waste into residential areas can seriously affect people?s health," warned Phuoc.
According to the city?s health prevention centre, diseases spread by solid waste include bacillus, typhoid and hepatitis.
To deal with the violators, the processing plant offered a reward to anyone informing them of illegal dumping, said Dung.
Phuoc said that co-operation between traffic inspectors and environmental police would be tightened.
