Re: Vietnam: 38 cases with suspected symptoms of influenza A/H5N1 infection in Ha Tinh

I agree. Seven samples were taken, and all seven were negative for H5N1. If I were in charge of testing, I would test for H1N1 next (to insure that these ill people aren't going to co-infect a bird with both viruses). Maybe we should put the "tested negative" into the thread title.

And I agree that 7 out of a different 45 people tested positive for cholera in a separate outbreak.

Of note is Dutchy's post #6 mentions a 30% increase in respiratory symptoms (in people who did not necessarily have contact with sick birds) so seasonal and pandemic flu are likely widespread in that area.

[The newswire above mentioned the suspected human cases of avian
influenza after avian influenza has reappeared in 5 communes in the
central province of Ha Tinh. The number of ill patients has not been
specified, however patients had pneumonia symptoms after they had
contact with sick and dead birds.

As of 27 Jan 2010, about 658 chickens and ducks have acquired the
H5N1 virus and become ill or died in the central Ha Tinh province.
Also, nearly 4000 poultry have been infected with the disease in 2
provinces (Ca Mau and Ha Tinh) of Viet Nam so far (see prior PRO/MBDS
posting Avian influenza - MBDS region (05): Viet Nam 20100128.0300).

More information from reliable sources on the actual numbers of
suspected avian influenza cases and laboratory test results for H5N1
infection of those cases would be greatly appreciated by PRO/MBDS.

Since 2003, there had been a total of 112 cases and 57 deaths of

[As of 30 Jan 2010, there were reports of a number of cases (the
actual number has not been specified) of people in the central
province of Ha Tinh who developed pneumonia symptoms after having had
contact with sick and dead birds (see prior PRO/MBDS posting Avian
influenza, human MBDS region: Viet Nam (Ha Tinh), susp. RFI 20100131.0333).

The newswire above mentions 7 suspected human avian influenza cases
in the central province of Ha Tinh. The tests for avian influenza A
(H5N1) in those 7 suspected cases showed negative results. While
there is not a specific statement linking the above mentioned
suspected cases with those ruled out according to the latest
