Over 17,400 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease recorded in Vietnam in first four months

HANOI, April 29 (Xinhua) -- There were some 17,410 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease recorded in 62 out of 63 cities and provinces across Vietnam since the beginning of 2014, official data showed Thursday.

Statistics by the General Department of Preventive Medicine under Vietnam's Ministry of Health said that the total number of infected cases in the four-month period went down 20 percent over the same period in 2013.

However, several localities recorded a sharp increase in the number of new patients, including southern Ho Chi Minh City (up 28. 9 percent), Ba Ria-Vung Tau (34.4 percent) and Kon Tum (69.7 percent)...

Vietnam at risk of hand-foot-mouth outbreak

The General Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health April 29 warned of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the country.

Tran Dac Phu, head of the Department of Preventive Medicine said since early this year, the country has over 17,400 hand-foot-mouth cases in 62 out of 63 provinces and cities. Most of cases are in Ho Chi Minh City with nearly 2,700 cases, an increase of 29 percent; the Southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau with over 1,100 cases, a soar of 34 percent; Ca Mau province in the southern tip of Vietnam with 940 cases and the highlands province of Kon Tum at 112 cases.

Phu said hand-foot-mouth disease takes place all year round and its peak often is in March to May and September to December...

Ho Chi Minh City reported a huge year-on-year jump of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, in April, along with measles and chickenpox, while dengue fever has claimed three lives.

Figures from the city Preventive Health Center released at a meeting on Wednesday showed that HFMD cases have continued to surge since February, reaching 2,950 cases by the end of April, up 27.7 percent year-on-year.

It said 708 new cases of HFMD occurred in April. ..

Ho Chi Minh City health authorities have warned that the number of hand, foot, and mouth disease cases has sharply increased and that the disease may become an epidemic in the near future.

Dr. Nguyen Huu ****, deputy director of the HCMC Health Department?s Preventive Health Center, issued the warning in a recent meeting with health centers from 24 districts of the city.

According to the center, 3,373 HFMD cases were reported in the city in the year to May 9, up 28.3 percent year on year.

The disease has spread to 236 out of the 332 wards, communes, and towns across the city, the center said...

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is also entering its peak period, with a significant increase in the number of cases in HCM City (29 per cent), Ba Ria-Vung Tau (27.8 per cent), Ca Mau (18.7 per cent), Lam Dong (18.6 per cent), and Soc Trang (8.4 per cent) incomparison with with the same period last year.

A total of 24,730 cases have been reported in 62 cities and provinces, with two people dying in the southern Long An and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces so far this year.

Last week, around 1,900 children were hospitalized with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide, up 4 percent from the week before, the Health Ministry?s Administration of Preventive Medicine reported yesterday.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been more than 24,700 cases of HFMD identified nationwide; two of those patients died of the disease. The number of cases represented a 14 percent drop from the same period last year...

First death from Hand, Foot and Mouth disease in HCMC this year

Doctors in Ho Chi Minh City have confirmed that an eight-month old baby has died of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease (HFMD), the first death from HFMD in the city this year.

The deceased baby, Tran Bao Chau, from the city?s Tan Phu District, came down with a fever on September 17, and was taken to a private doctor, who diagnosed a sore throat and prescribed medication, Chau?s parents said.

Two days later, the fever remained, and the baby was vomiting, so her parents took her to another private doctor, who said the baby was suffering from pharyngitis, adding that Chau had also contracted inflammatory bowel disease.
