Hand-foot-mouth cases non-fatal

HA NOI ? Three cases of meningococcal disease and 72 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease have been reported nationwide since January 21, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien said yesterday.

None of the cases were fatal, he said. One case of meningococcal disease was in Ha Noi and the other two were in HCM City, with all three patients in stable conditions, he added.

The meningococcal patient in Ha Noi was a three-month-old girl from Me Linh District who was taken to the National Paediatrics Hospital on January 16 with a high temperature, vomiting and diarrhoea. She is currently under supervision at the hospital in a stable condition.

The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology joined hands with the Ha Noi Department of Preventive Medicine to sterilise the areas around the patient's house and instructed those who had come into contact with the patient. No further outbreak has been detected.

Two meningococcal patients in HCM City, aged two and six, were also tested positive with the meningococcal bacteria.

About 650 meningitis cases have been reported per year over the last 10 years, with most of the patients in northern provinces, said the director of the Ha Noi Department of Preventive Medicine, Nguyen Van Binh. Last year, 305 cases were reported, resulting in four fatalities, he said, adding that the disease often occurred in spring when the weather was humid and the bacteria could spread quickly.

The disease can cause brain injury, causing patients lose their hearing and suffer from septicaemia, said Binh.

Meanwhile, the northern city of Hai Phong has reported 48 cases of hand-foot-mouth patients since January 21, followed by Ha Noi with five. The remaining 19 cases were in southern cities and provinces.

During the recently-conluded Tet (lunar new year) holiday, 146,260 were admitted to hospitals nationwide, according to figures from municipal and provincial departments of health. Over 22,600 of these were hospitalised for injuries suffered in traffic accidents.

No major food poisoning outbreaks affecting more than two victims have been reported this month, according to the Ministry of Health. ? VNS

Vietnam reports sudden surge in HFMD infections
Last Updated: Thursday, March 01, 2012 03:15:00

More than 1,400 new cases of the hand, foot and mouth disease were recorded among children in Vietnam in the last week of February.

This raised the total number of children with the disease to 7,731 so far this year, including nine deaths.

A report by news website VietNamNet said the latest weekly figure showed an upsurge compared to previous weeks this year when between 900-1,000 new cases were recorded.

The Preventive Health Department under the Health Ministry said in a recent statement that the disease was still spreading in a complicated manner, especially in the central region.

The disease is caused by intestinal viruses, of which the most common strain in Vietnam is Enterovirus 71 (EV-71), causing mouth sores and blisters on hands and feet.

Several studies carried out by the department have shown a high rate of healthy people carrying the virus strain, up to 71 percent.

This presents a big problem with controlling the disease, which does not have a vaccine or specific medicine for treatment...

Dr. Hung was speaking at a meeting on April 4, to review the prevention of the disease in schools. He said that 35 per cent of the cases were reported in the 3 to 5-year-old age group, mostly pre-schoolers.

Most of the children were living in the city?s suburban districts like Binh Tan, Binh Chanh, Thu Duc and Hoc Mon, said Dr. Hung.

Sixteen die from hand-foot-mouth disease this year

HCM CITY ? The minister of health and pediatricians nationwide yesterday (April 5) gathered to discuss measures to reduce fatalities caused by hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), which had killed 16 people nationwide this year.

"Training courses on surveillance, prevention and control of HFMD for doctors as well as nurses at pediatric health care facilities is a must to restrain the number of deaths due to HFMD," said Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien.

"Five training units have been set up for all doctors and nurses at pediatric health care facilities nationwide, with a focus on localities with high infection cases and deaths.

"Proper implementation of formal guidelines for surveillance, prevention and treatment of the disease, which were issued by the ministry last year, will help to treat the disease effectively," Tien said.

The ministry has worked with provincial people's committees to provide funding for local health care facilities so they can buy necessary equipment as well as medicines for treatment.

By the end of March, 21,295 cases of HFMD were reported nationwide, including 16 deaths, according to statistics released by the ministry's Preventive Medicine Department.

The number of cases rose by 9.1 per cent against the same period last year while the number of fatalities were three times higher than last year's figures.

All deaths were caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71), with children under three years old accounting for 87.5 per cent and the remaining 12.5 per cent children between three to five years old.

The southern region reported the highest number of infection cases (9,337) and fatalities (13)...
