THE dreaded winter flu has hit Victorians, with three times as many people infected than at the same time last year.
Health department figures showed 723 cases of influenza were confirmed in Victoria until last week.
Only 234 cases were confirmed in the same time last year.
Casey was the hardest hit area with 52 people confirmed, Stonnington had 48 and Boroondara had 42.
The number of cases is far below 2009 levels, when the country was hit with a pandemic of the H1N1 (swine) influenza.
More than 5500 people were diagnosed between January and July that year.
Influenza specialist group chair Alan Hampson said vaccination was the best way to prevent catching the flu.
“People should realise that influenza is not like the common cold, it’s much more serious,” Dr Hampson said.
