Contagious disease found in Arizona horses
May 29, 2010
Horses have been found with the contagious disease, vesicular stomatitis, in Arizona.
The property in Cochise County, where the animals live, has been quarantined, the Arizona Department of Agriculture says.
The disease causes blister-like lesions, not unlike those from foot and mouth disease, to form in the mouth and on the dental pad, tongue, lips, nostrils, hooves, and teats of infected animals.
These blisters swell and break, leaving raw tissue that is so painful that infected animals generally refuse to eat or drink and show signs of lameness.
Severe weight loss usually follows, and in dairy cows, which can also be infected, a severe drop in milk production commonly occurs.
The clinical signs of vesicular stomatitis are also similar to those of swine vesicular disease, which, like foot and mouth disease, is a foreign disease in the United States...
...Humans can also become infected with vesicular stomatitis, but no cases have been reported from this outbreak.
