Vaccines against seasonal influenza virus are currently being developed in Quimbiotec under the Ministry of Popular Power for Science, Technology and Industry Middle and corporate arm of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), also contain the pandemic strain (H1N1 ), following the recommendations announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) last February.
In February and September each year, WHO convenes to determine the most appropriate composition of the seasonal vaccine, by reference to the viral strain most likely to remain active in northern and southern hemispheres.
While this suggestion goes to the countries of the northern hemisphere due to the flu season coincides with the beginning of autumn (in September), WHO has already warned that in September 2010 to urge the nations of the Southern Hemisphere to introduce pandemic strain (H1N1) in their vaccines for seasonal influenza.
The composition of the new vaccine, according to WHO, is the following: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1), A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) and B/Brisbane/60/2008.
Against this background, Venezuela comes forward and decides to include the pandemic strain (H1N1) in the seasonal vaccine is in the development phase since late 2007. That year, construction began on the first floor of the country producing vaccines against seasonal influenza. This measure was adopted in line with the new guidelines suggested by WHO in 2005, when the authorities delegated to each country's internal risk dominance of pandemic influenza, the increased production of vaccines in countries where they are produced and the beginning of it in those territories with the capacity to manufacture them.
First it was Newcastle
Before the development of this vaccine, Quimbiotec conducted pilot studies with influenza-like illnesses. Such as vaccines against the disease are obtained by replication of the virus in embryonic chicken eggs, Quimbiotec successfully developed, a pilot scale, the technology for the production of a potential vaccine against Newcastle, contagious and fatal viral disease that only affects birds and is also derived from embryonic chicken eggs.
The development of this technology was conducted for the education and training in viral handling techniques, without dealing with the times by producing a vaccine for this poultry disease.
During the technical training, the team of scientists from Quimbiotec worked with the Laboratory of Avian Pathology, National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) and the Laboratory of Molecular Virology and Microbiology Center for Cell Biology IVIC. The INIA shared their knowledge and skills in the diagnosis of Newcastle, as the agency responsible for maintaining surveillance of avian influenza in Venezuela, even though it has not been detected in our country. IVIC, meanwhile, lent its facilities and specialists in the field of viral purification, Quimbiotec absent in this being a producer of human blood products.
