Venezuela will make the quarantine more flexible despite an increase in COVID-19 cases

EFE • 9 Aug 2020 - 06:10 PM

The Venezuelan government announced this Sunday that a new week of easing the quarantine that has been in force in the country since last March 16 will come into force, despite the increase in cases of COVID-19 that has been registered in recent days .

The president of the South American country, Nicol?s Maduro, said in a work act broadcast by public television VTV that Caracas, and the nearby states of Miranda and La Guaira, will enter a phase of "monitored partial flexibility" that will allow ten sectors of the economy, including banking and services such as plumbing and refrigeration, are reopening.

This partial relaxation will also apply in the central states of Aragua and Carabobo, in the western states of T?chira and Zulia, which border Colombia, in the eastern state of Sucre and in the Amazonian state of Bol?var, which borders Brazil.

The remaining 16 federal entities in the country will enjoy a "general flexibility", with opening permits for 34 branches of the economy.

Maduro did not explain why he decided to open the economy despite the increase in cases, but in the past he has justified similar measures, stating that a "respite" should be allowed for the Venezuelan economy.

"We are going to 7x7 - a week of quarantine combined with another of relaxation - because we have to do it," Maduro said today without offering further details. "The battle continues, because security measures must be increased," he added, insisting on frequent hand washing and the use of masks.

He also asked to "convince" those who do not take biosecurity measures and therefore infect and spread the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, among the population.

"We are going to take this more seriously, we are going to convince," he said before stating that "the vast majority (of Venezuelans) take care (of COVID-19), but a minority, out of ignorance or because they lost their fear of it to the virus, it is not taken care of and it takes the virus here and there ".

In Venezuela, 25,805 people have contracted SARS-CoV-2, of which 223 have died, according to official figures.

This Sunday alone, 844 new cases were detected, 337 of them in Caracas, which represents 42% of the infections reported today, Maduro said.

The Venezuelan president also reported that he extended for 30 days the state of alarm that he decreed in mid-March, a measure that, he said today, allows him to make decisions quickly to attack the disease.
