Pan American Health Organization has issued a warning against measles? outbreak in the Americas, with the highest in Venezuela. Venezuela and the nearby regions were declared measles free in 2016.

PAHO has issued an epidemiological alert due to the outbreak and has asked countries to speed up their efforts to vaccinate the masses.

Measles is a highly contagious disease and affects children in particular. The disease is preventable with the right vaccination.

According to PAHO, nine countries in the American subcontinent have confirmed cases of measles in report in January 2018 with Venezuela at the highest with 159 cases, Brazil(14),the United States(13), Canada (4), Mexico(4), Antigua and Barbuda (1), Colombia (1) and Guatemala (1).

In 2016, after a massive, decades-long vaccination campaign, the World Health Organization declared Latin America free of measles ? the highly-contagious virus that curses the young and can cause pneumonia, encephalitis and even death.

But less than two years later, a virulent outbreak in Venezuela, combined with a mass exodus from the South American country, is threatening that medical success story.

According to new figures from the Pan American Health Organization, Venezuela has seen 886 cases of measles since June, including 159 cases this year alone.

The second-biggest outbreak in the hemisphere this year is Brazil, with 14 cases, and all of them were imported from neighboring Venezuela. Colombia has also reported three confirmed cases, all from Venezuela...

At least 54 children dead in Venezuela measles outbreak: NGO

Caracas, Apr 6 At least 54 children from an indigenous tribe have died from an outbreak of measles in a remote jungle region of eastern Venezuela, a human rights group said today.

"The propagation started in early January and we are calling for a health alert," said Armando Obdola, head of the Kape Kape NGO.

"The most recent deaths were of six children, but since January the toll is 54," said Jose Naveda, a member of the NGO who visited the affected area.

Obdola said he had been recording the deaths in the state of Delta Amacuro, where children of the Warao indigenous community have been dying since the beginning of the year...
