National Institute of Virology (NIV) officials are closely monitoring the swine flu virus for a new strain that has created health problems in the US. "So far, we have not found the H3N2v strain in our samples, '' NIV Director Dr A C Mishra told The Indian Express.
The new strain is a variant of H3N2 virus that circulates in pigs and has now acquired a gene from pandemic human influenza H1N1 virus. At present, H3N2 virus is circulating as part of seasonal influenza. However, there is no mutation of this virus in samples received by NIV, Mishra said.
NIV is a part of the global influenza surveillance network. "Genetic analysis of samples are being conducted and there has been no mutation of the virus," Mishra assured.
