Health authorities in Vanuatu say an outbreak of dengue fever could get worse.

The Ministry of Health is spearheading a campaign to eradicate mosquito breeding sites and educate people on how to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

This is an update of the dengue outbreak situation from the Ministry of Health.

The dengue outbreak was detected and declared in the first week of January 2014.

As of February 25, a total of 865 patients had been reported through the dengue surveillance system from health facilities.
It has been observed that the number of reported dengue cases has become consistent within the last three weeks, varying between 100 and 150 cases per week.

Furthermore, it has been observed that very few patients were reported (or sought medical attention) during weekend periods. This is probably due to the limited access to consultation services at the weekend, or for other behavioural reasons.

Only 3% of reported cases were classified as cases with one or more danger signs, which require more medical attention and these were admitted to hospital. So far, no case has been classified as severe enough to require intensive care services. The age group between 14 and 25 years were those most affected.
