Vanquished by a virus

AlaskaDenise

In Memoriam
I?ve been thinking about War of the Worlds, the H.G. Wells novel where aliens conquer our planet.

Civilization is at the mercy of these invaders as they wreck havoc on the world until one day, they drop dead. Of what? Global warming? Comet? Tom Cruise? No, in the end what takes down these alien behemoths is a common virus. This week, I believe it.

As I write this with itchy eyes, a pounding head, and dripping everything, I marvel at the fantastic power of the virus. Super-strength aliens aside, it?s remarkable how quickly and absolutely something tiny like an influenza virus can take out a healthy adult.

A few days ago, I was dancing in gogo shoes to Nancy Sinatra (don?t ask.) Today, part of me feels like I?m dead. And I?m not alone. Schools, shopping malls, and of course doctor?s offices are starting to look like scenes from Night of the Living Dead as people shuffle around with puffy eyes, headaches, and sore throats.

Cold medicines, herbal remedies, and healing rubs aside, the only way to battle the mighty flu is to avoid it. Refreshingly, unlike space invaders, the weapon of choice is solid hand washing habits: warm water, lots of soap, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. But it?s too late for the afflicted like me.

These sub-microscopic organisms on the ?edge of life? sure are able to do a lot of damage. Historically, influenza has been a merciless killer that makes Wells? aliens look like a bunch of baby spiders. The Spanish flu of 1918 is thought to have killed up to 100 million people worldwide. Million people! In more recent years, the alarm over bird flu and SARS shows how quickly a virus can alter the world.

In many ways, the humble virus is like Wells? alien invaders but on a Lilliputian scale. These miniscule pincushions are able to bring the world to its knees and take out the strongest of us with almost no effort. And like the invaders, they show no mercy.

For those unaffected this winter so far, be warned. They?re out there and they?re coming for you.

Re: Vanquished by a virus

Interesting. But, a question: Why should the extinction of humankind happen during a contemporary individual lifespan? It seems a kind of anthropocentric idea, since microbes exist for thousands of centuries, well before the first homo sapiens walk on the earth. Human species isn't eternal as well as all the other species who live here.
The End of the World - for humankind - may happen today or in 100, 1000, 10,000 years, and none can say the moment. For the life, the story isn't yet written.

Re: Vanquished by a virus

im not sure if it has helped my family or not but we all take a daily dose of sambucol and we have been doing our normal routine going to the shops and supermarkets and seeing people with the sniffels and coughs and sneezing but luckily none of us have been affected,so not sure if its just pure luck or the sambucol...........??.

I read this story as being somewhat humorous, given the comparison to H.G. Wells. It certainly pokes fun at our very anthropocentric view of microbes. :D

That being said, the potential impact of something as small as a virus is truly amazing. The more I learn about influenza, the more I admire the genius of the system.

Given that our genome shows the remains of previous battles with catastrophic retroviruses, perhaps it is well that we get a "reality check" of our views toward pathogens. We need to be reminded of just what you say - microbes existed long before humans walked on the earth.

If we accept the theory that the mimivirus may have played a role in the development of all life on earth, we should realize that they are not the occasional "enemy" in our world, but rather we are merely a small part of their world.

Personally, I accept microbes as part of life and hope to live a peaceful coexistance with them.

.

Re: Vanquished by a virus

never in history has humankind changed so much as in the last 100 years.
Well, 500 years if you want.

Intercontinental traveling, industrial poultry keeping, may have
"created" human influenza-A in the subtropes.

Now we are planning our own replacement by cyborgs or robots
who will be immune to viruses...

As you know certainly, H.G. Wells wrote some pieces concerning microbes and bio-warfare: for examples, in the short story 'The Stolen Bacillus' where an anarchist tried to get from a biologist lab a vial containing cholera bacillus with the aim to contaminate London water mains. Or in 'War in the Air' where at the end of a world war an outbreak wiped out almost the entire world's population.
