It's been a little more than a year since they suffered the devastating loss of their daughter and Vacaville parents Juan and Roxann Clara still struggle with her death.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, Browns Valley Elementary School first-grader Alexis Clara, 6, was sent home feeling ill and running a fever. Three days later, she would die in a local hospital from what Solano County coroner's officials would classify as complications due to the H1N1 virus. Today would have been her 8th birthday.
"It was the worst day of our lives," Juan said. "There was nothing we could do to stop it. It was just a shock to all of us."
The Claras, who have five children, are still trying to comprehend the events leading up to Alexis' death. After coming home early from school that day, she bounced back quickly, the Claras said, returning to school the following day and even playing in a soccer match that Saturday. However, Roxann noted that Alexis was feeling tired.
On that Sunday, the family planned a trip to a local amusement park but decided Alexis should stay home with a family member to get some rest.
That night her condition deteriorated, and Alexis complained she was cold and couldn't walk or sit up....
