West Nile mosquitoes found in Prince William County
July 25, 2010 - 8:40am
Health Director Dr. Alison Ansher announced that mosquitoes collected by the Prince William Mosquito Control Program have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Mosquitoes collected in Woodbridge on July 8 and 9, 2010 tested positive for the virus. In 2009, the first positive mosquitoes were identified in late August.
?The identification of these infected mosquitoes marks the time when there is increased risk of contracting the disease?, Dr. Ansher said. She emphasizes that citizens play their part in prevention by eliminating mosquito breeding areas around the home and by protecting themselves from mosquito bites while outside from now until the first hard frost.
There were no human cases of West Nile Virus in Prince William in 2009. There was 1 human case in the City of Manassas and 4 others in Virginia. There were no human deaths. West Nile Virus was first detected in Virginia in the fall of 2000.
