Doctors in Tashkent have recently observed dozens of cases of mumps amongst children.
?We?ve had children with mumps from Chilanzar, Yunus-Abad, Mirobadsky, and Yakkasarsky districts. They are mostly school children but we?ve seen a few younger kids as well,? says a pediatrician from a private clinic in Tashkent.
?Although we don?t have the full picture of all the mumps cases, we know from conversations with colleagues that outbreaks have been reported across half of the city. So we can say that other districts must have cases as well,? says a doctor from the MDS clinic in Tashkent...
...Orders to report mumps as SARS
Despite the optimistic view by authorities, public and private doctors have received a directive from the government to register mumps cases as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).
?The Ministry of Health does not want to officially acknowledge this mumps outbreak,? Mirobadsky district health workers explain.
Schools in Uzbekistan have received a similar official ?recommendation? from the Ministry of Public Education. The request obliges teachers to convince parents to tell other people that their children are sick from the flu or SARS rather than from mumps...
