Honestly, at a soccer game on Tuesday people were saying 'I sure hope this flu doesn't spread to Vermont' - as if.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- University of Vermont officials have confirmed that one of their students has been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as swine flu.

According to the school's doctors, a male student, who lives off-campus, came to the UVM Student Health Center feeling ill and ended up testing positive for H1N1.

The Health Center started testing students with flu symptoms at random several weeks ago.

"It's really a way to just help us know H1N1 is here, or on the contrary, seasonal influenza is here," said Dr. Jon Porter, UVM's Medical Director.

Porter said it's likely the virus has spread and recommends young people living in close quarters get the H1N1 flu vaccine once it's available in the state.

In the meantime, students say they will do their best to stay healthy.

"I'm not that worried. We'll definitely take precautions like washing our hands and stuff a lot," said Mia Austin, a freshman student.

Exactly. That's the only place that publishes numbers. Vt Dept of Health site just refers to the CDC site, which just says sporadic. Regular people still think we don't have flu in Vermont.
