Two children from pneumonia and flu deaths

Lucknow: Swab samples of a suspected case of swine flu were sent for test to SGPGI after the 23-year old woman died at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital on Sunday. A resident of Indiranagar, the woman had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia at RML hospital for the past few days and had been complaining of heavy breathlessness. Attending doctors later suspected that it could be a case of swine flu.
"We have sent the sample to SGPGI for confirmation as it was a suspected case of swine flu," confirmed Dr D S Negi, director, RML hospital. "The result expected by Monday," he added.

A second case of influenza A H3N2 strain was also confirmed after being tested at the microbiology lab of King George's Medical University (KGMU).


A 48-year-old man, resident of Aishbagh had died due to complications underlying swine flu on August 14, while report confirming positive could only come in three days late on August 17. A 45-year-old woman, resident of Harauni station, Banthra was said to have died on August 13 and a third, 26-year-old woman, a resident of Nigoha also died on August 13.


While the city tally for positive swine flu cases reached a high of 617 since January, 92% of these cases, 573 to be precise, were reported in the month of August alone. The city on Thursday, recorded a total of eight deaths due to swine flu since January, of which only one was reported in May and all others were from August too.


Of the total cases reported since January, 209 people were claimed to have fully recovered after a week long isolation period. As many as 372 were said to be isolated at their homes and taking Tamiflu medicine while 31 people were admitted to different hospitals of the district. The office of the chief medical officer (CMO) of the district also said it was unable to get complete information of five cases for status verification.


The second case of influenza A H3N2 strain also reported on Thursday morning from KGMU pertained to a 41-year-old woman from Gomti Nagar. "I had first developed cough and cold last week and went to a private hospital in Gomti Nagar but no medicines or injections worked and I was put on drip. I later developed rashes and was then asked to go for testing to KGMU. The report said H3N2 and I was told to continue with the anti-viral medicines and be in isolation till my cough subsides which," said the woman when contacted by TOI.
