17-yr-old tests positive for swine flu


A 17-year-old student has tested positive for swine flu in this district, health officials said today. Deepak Mishra (17) -- who was suffering from fever -- was admitted to the District Hospital by his father. Chief Medical and Health Officer Santosh Shukla said a team of the Health Department has examined the health of all the students of his class. Rampur village-resident Dharmendra Thakur (17) was tested positive to swine flu yesterday and, the total number of students affected has gone up to two.

Lucknow, Aug 24 (News reporter): The capital is hit by the flu. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (Sjeepijiai) in the Microbiology Department on Wednesday confirmed the disease in three patients.
One patient in Pijiai other two are private hospitals. Last year the flu had spread to the capital in the same season. Hundreds of people were struck by. Patients in hospitals due to lack of ventilator treatment was tough to meet.

KANPUR: The district health authorities claimed that three cases of swine flu were detected last week.

Swine flu is common in winters. The doctors informed that the disease rapidly spreads during winters when cases of cold and flu rise.

The health authorities claimed that H1N1 virus has not been found in the city so far. The three patients were from other cities. "They did not consult us and got the treatment done from SGPGI, Lucknow and private hospitals," Dr Shailendra Tiwari, swine flu, co-ordinator at UHM Hospital, said.

The government hospitals are not prepared to tackle the disease, sources said.

An H1N1 outbreak could quickly exhaust the capacity of hospitals. Most of the government hospitals are ill-equipped to handle a major surge of patients, said a doctor of Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. There is a shortage of medicines and swine flue detection kits at Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College. It is the only centre for H1N1 virus detection in the city.

He urged that the health care institutions and government agencies should immediately review emergency preparedness plans as flu season is about to approach.

The doctors of Ursula Horsman Hospital (UHM) claimed that they are completely prepared to tackle H1N1.

Dr Shailendra Tiwari informed that UHM already had a special 10-bed vantilator ward for the patients of swine flu. It will soon be converted into an AC one.

Last year, the city witnessed 175 patients of swine flu and 25 death were reported.

A medical officer at UHM informed that the stock of medicines of swine flu has expired and has been returned to the associated department a few months back. The syrup is out of stock.
"We are trying our best to tackle the situation," chief medical officer Jai Singh said.

Swine flu alert in state; 13 cases in 10 days

Lucknow:

Following the rise in number of swine flu cases in the state, the health department has issued an alert in all the districts.

However, the health directorate is yet to prepare itself for monitoring the rising number of swine flu cases. In the last 10 days, the state has seen as many as 13 patients testing positive for swine flu in four districts.

?With the rise in number of swine flu cases, we have issued an alert in all the districts. The alert was issued on Friday evening and all Chief Medical Officers of the districts have been asked to assess their stock of medicines, tamiflu tablets and syrup for children and send the requirement to the directorate. Once we get the reports, we will send the requirement of drugs, masks and swine flu kits etc to the Centre,? said Dr Ramji Lal, Director General, Medical and Health (DG MH).

Starting from August 18, the state has seen 13 patients testing positive for swine flu, four of whom are admitted in SGPGI, Lucknow. Of these, two cases have been reported from Deoria district, one each from Kanpur and Varanasi and the remaining are from Lucknow. With one case already reported from Lucknow in the month of January, the total number of swine flu cases in the state this year has reached 14.

14-month-old admitted to LLR with H1N1 symptoms


KANPUR: One more case of suspected swine (H1N1) flu was reported from the city. A 14-month-old child was admitted to the special emergency ward at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital with swine flu-like symptoms.

The child was admitted to the Bal Rog Hospital of LLR on Sunday. The patient was suffering from high and continuous fever with cough and cold. Initially the doctors treated the child for viral infection but then wanted H1N1 test done on the child. Hence the district medical authorities were informed and a rapid response team of chief medical officer went to LLR to collect the blood samples of the patient. The samples have been sent to SGPGI, Lucknow. The patient has been isolated to prevent other patients from getting infected in case it turns out to be a case of swine flu.

Shailendra Tiwari, additional chief medical superintendent of Ursula Horsman Hospital, said e swine flu virus had become endemic in India, "it has permanently settled here like the seasonal flu. Therefore, sporadic swine flu cases and casualties are likely to be seen in the coming winter season," he informed. Meanwhile, the LLR authorities claimed they were fully prepared to tackle the swine flu threat.
