Kanpur zoo animals to get mineral water

KANPUR: The Kanpur zoo is going to take another lead among the top zoos in the country. The zoo authorities are going to adopt RO water purification technology to supply purified water to zoo inmates. The plant, to be installed in the zoo's hospital premises, is expected to be operational by Wednesday.

Inmates Vishnu and Lakshmi, a lion and lioness, were given RO water on Monday to ensure their good health. Lakshmi is suffering from a disease called leptospirosis, caused by the bacteria leptospira. Zoo officials say the nullah flowing through the zoo is the source of leptosipra. The bacteria can cause renal failure and also affect vital organs like lungs, brain, liver and uterus.
Till now, underground water is pumped, stored in tanks and supplied to the animal enclosures through water pipes. Sensing danger that the ground water carried dissolved pesticides, heavy metals and other impurities, the zoo decided to install purification system.
