VARANASI: Taking a serious note of an spurt in the number of reported cases of meningitis (brain fever) and surfacing of some cases of cerebral malaria, the district health administration has started to keep a close vigil on the vector-borne diseases in post-monsoon season.

While the recent death of two persons from meningitis, reported from neighbouring Jaunpur district on Saturday (October 14), has put the administration on alert, the transmission season for proliferation of vectors (mosquitoes) is not allowing the authorities to relax. The only consolation for the health officials, however, has been the fact that the region is yet to report any case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) or acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) that has already claimed over 400 lives in eastern UP region this year, with the disease mainly spreading around Gorakhpur region.

As per reports of various government hospitals (DDU and SPG) along with referral hospitals like Sir Sunderlal Hospital, BHU, around 50 cases of meningitis have been reported from Varanasi and neighbouring districts in the last 40 days (from September 1 to October 10). In addition, the reports of district malaria office indicate that as many as three cases of deadly cerebral malaria (caused by Plasmodium falciparum) has been reported during the period.

As per reports of the CMO office, while total cases of positive malaria were confined to 73 till August this year, the number shot up to 112, including three cases of cerebral malaria, in September. Similarly, the dengue cases have risen from 11 (till August) to 17 with Varanasi reporting 10 cases in all.
