ONLY HALF OF PROJECTED REGISTRANTS TO ATTEND FLU CONFERENCE

ST. GEORGE ? The World Health Organization reports the number of worldwide human cases of avian influenza increased from three in 2003 to 84 in 2006.
The number of deaths followed the same trend, increasing from three in 2003 to 54 in 2006. Tomorrow, officials from the state and local health departments will host an all-day pandemic preparedness summit to raise public awareness and make plans for the county to face the dilemma should the need arise.
?This is actually a call to action for the community to come together to pull its resources to be able to meet the demands of emergencies effectively,? said Dr. David Blodgett, director of the Southwest Utah Public Health Department.
?Because ?pandemic? is a simultaneous outbreak, the federal government and other communities are not going to be able to come and help us,? said Paulette Valentine, Emergency Response Coordinator at the Southwest Public Health Department. ?We need to be able to, in our own communities, take care of ourselves. That?s why the partnerships are so important.?
As of Tuesday afternoon, less than half of the numbers the health department had anticipated to attend the summit had registered; only 203 of the 500 they anticipated. And while the numbers and seeming lack of interest concerns Valentine, she?s hopeful that the summit will generate further interest and necessitate further meetings and more education in the near future.
