PARIS (Reuters) - The United States has reported an outbreak of the low pathogenic H7N3 bird flu virus at a turkey farm in California, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Friday.

The outbreak at a farm in Stanislaus County led to all 26,258 birds of the flock exposed to the virus being killed and disposed of, the Paris-based OIE said in a note on its website, citing a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

[TD]As part of the pre-slaughter testing and surveillance program for H5/H7 Avian Influenza, H7N3 low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) was detected in a commercial meat-type turkey flock. Partial HA /NA sequencing determined the H7 and N3 to be a low pathogenic virus of North American wild bird lineage. Further characterization is pending virus recovery. The affected flock was depopulated and the carcasses have been rendered. The USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) are conducting an epidemiological investigation of the event and have increased testing as a result of the detection. Ten additional commercial poultry premises located within the 10km zone are being tested for influenza virus.[/TD]

Surveillance conducted within 10km of the initial farm has detected H7N3 LPAI in another commercial meat-turkey farm. A comprehensive epidemiological investigation with enhanced surveillance is ongoing. Partial sequence data from the third detection is consistent with the index. State officials have quarantined the affected premises and implemented movement controls. The turkeys from this premises will be depopulated through controlled marketing.[/TD]
