Since I live here I will give my personal opinion.

I think the 2 doctors are earnest in their reporting but I think it is too early to declare the situation "contained". I think we still do not know much about coronavirus MERS.

People should "up their game" regarding hygiene and community responsibility - as a new behavior. We are losing our antibiotics. Even the best flu vaccine is only about 60% effective. We need to be fully engaged in illness prevention in our own lives. Wash hands frequently. Stand a few feet away from people when in public. If someone is ill in your household, keep them isolated as much as possible to prevent others from catching the illness. Stay home when you are sick. Frequently wipe down common areas at work and at home.

At this time no one I know, or anyone in my family, is changing their daily routines due to coronavirus concerns. We are all out in public doing regular "stuff": grocery shopping, banking, working, etc. etc.

I am hopeful since, so far, all of the tests on the contacts have come back negative. The next few days will tell the tale.

MERS is not only an hot issue for Florida citizens, although you are experiencing for first time the incursions of this relatively new virus.

North America feels to be 'isolated' from the mess of the rest of the world in many ways.

We in Europe are experiencing an exceptional influx of migrants, refugees, displaced people from various regions of Middle East, Sub-Saharian Africa and even from Af-Pak!

These people Wanders from months in some Northern Africa makeshisft camps, in unbearable conditions: without basic hygiene, food, health care, they are sold to various clans that are involved in human trafficking.

When they finally starts the final leg of their long travel, boarding dilapidated boats, Southern European Countries Navy patrol ships rescue them, when they are not drowned yet.

Recent media footages portrayed Milan Trasportation Hub (one of the bigger in the country) transformed in a bivouac for Syrian migrants, without any kind of assistance, included lack of toilets etc.

Through Milan Central Station transits hundreds thousands commuters per day: if some of these migrants would be infected with a respiratory pathogen readily transmissible, all of you can imagine the result!

So, the perspective of the events should be not overlooked, biased, influenced or intoxicated by messages that are not consistent with the reality.

And the reality is cruel: millions of people are leaving wars and poverty every year and they will not stop to 'invade' affluent regions of the world because of MERS or PHEIC.

Are the affluent countries ready to help these people?

US and some other wealthy nations fail to recognize that every day there are thousands fleeing from humanitarian wars, authoritarian regimes, extreme poverty.

No safety for millions of refugee and migrants equals no safety for affluent Florida communities!

Recognizing reality is the first step to understand and drive every kind of change.

Not to change the topic of this thread, but there are an estimated 11 million people residing in the United States who came without government permission. Most all fleeing horrendous living conditions in other parts of the world.

We all bear the responsibility for this global condition.

~All health care workers test negative for MERS-CoV~

Tallahassee ? On May 12, 2014, the Florida Department of Health announced the first Florida case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in Orange County.

The patient continues to improve.

All health care workers who had contact with the patient were tested for MERS-CoV and all of the results have come back negative.

There is no broad risk of MERS-CoV infection for the general public, and no threat to those traveling to the Orlando area.

The Florida Department of Health continues to work closely with Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure appropriate care of the patient, and to protect the health of all residents and visitors in Florida.

Surveillance, contact investigation and testing continue, following standard public health protocols.

That's correct. And some 'rich' countries have huge debt loads and their faux wealth does not translate into accessible, equitable and effective healthcare for citizens. I wish we were doing less MERS and more whooping cough testing - I know of cases locally where babies have died or people have gotten quite ill when pertussis coughs were dangerously misdiagnosed since pertussis testing was not done.

That's why it is frustrating to me when people infected with a novel, poorly adapted zoonotic virus are allowed on planes. Maybe that won't increase the chances of serial passage and adaptation, (beyond what is happening already in originating countries), but at the very least it is an infection control burden for the receiving country's healthcare facilities. What is the point of all the surveillance and media hoopla if the strictest control measures are not in place?

Tallahassee ? The first patient in Florida with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection has been discharged from the hospital in Orange County. The patient has now tested negative for MERS-CoV and has recovered from the virus. All health care workers and household contacts who had contact with the patient were tested for MERS-CoV and all of those results have come back negative. There is no broad risk of MERS-CoV infection for the general public, and no threat to those traveling to the Orlando area.

The Florida Department of Health continues to work closely with Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure appropriate follow up, and to protect the health of all residents and visitors in Florida. ORLANDO --

Follow-up testing on the seven health care workers, including one physician, from Orlando Regional Medical Center who were exposed to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome infection has come back negative, officials said Tuesday.

The Department of Health has cleared the employees to return to work. They could be scheduled as early as Tuesday afternoon, but many most likely will resume their normal schedules Wednesday.

Preliminary testing on the 16 health care workers, including two physicians from Dr. P Phillips Hospital, has also come back negative for MERS. Those workers will receive additional testing this week...

Two healthy Greene County residents tested for MERS

Two Greene County residents are awaiting test results for the MERS virus that they possibly were exposed to on a flight to Orlando, a top Greene County health official said today.

Kendra Findley, the administrator of community health and epidemiology, said the two had voluntary blood tests as part of a nationwide effort by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to test everyone who was on the flight to Orlando which originated in Saudi Arabia.

"Neither one had symptoms at all so I'm fairly confident that the test results will come back negative," Findley said.
