22 influenza-associated pediatric mortality. I wonder why they have nothing in the column titles "novel influenza A virus infections."

So, that's 22 ILI assoc. pediatric deaths in selected cities only? That's not a cumulative US total?

The number of pediatric fatalities reported is a national figure. It is a seperate number from the 122 city mortality data.

There are fatalities from Washington, Wisconsin and Guam on this week's report. Missouri and Idaho reported one pediatric fatality each last week. Idaho and Kentucky each reported a fatality in week 40.

Look at Table III. (last one at the bottom of the link above) which shows the Deaths in 122 U.S. Cities for week ending October 24, 2009 (42nd week). The information is buried a bit, but look at the column P&I Total...if I am interpreting this right it is the total deaths in those cities for that week from Pneumonia and Influenza (see note marked with "dagger").

If you total the P&I for the 122 cities in the eight regions, the total is 775 deaths in week 42 from Pneumonia/Influenza.

The following table is for cities of the 122 that had 10 or more deaths from Pneumonia/Influenza during the week ending 24 October2009.

When I previewed the post, the computer is squishing everything together. The first number is Cities 10+ P&I deaths week ending 24 Oct 2009

NYC, Philadephia, Columbus, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Sacramento seem to have very high numbers for all ages.


The second number is the number of deaths in people aged 0 to 44 from all reportable diseases for week ending 24 Oct 09.

The third figure is for the number of deaths in people aged 0 to 24 from all reportable diseases for week ending 24 Oct 09


You may want to pay close attention to the 0 to 24 age groups.

I followed the footnote web link in '§' to see the states and territories that have included/excluded pediatric influenza deaths as a notifiable disease during 2007 - 2009:


"§ Not reportable in all states. Data from states where the condition is not reportable are excluded from this table, except starting in 2007 for the domestic arboviral diseases and influenza-associated pediatric mortality, and in 2003 for SARS-CoV.
Reporting exceptions are available at http://www.cdc.gov/epo/dphsi/phs/infdis.htm."


This footnote seems cryptic to me- does it mean that they MAY include data from those states if received?

As RoRo points out, some states that do not include the condition in their surveillance system have reported deaths.

Clearly I am new to the MMWR and have not been following it. It was not labeled as CUMMULATIVE on the October 30, 2009 update, but I searched back in the CDC data bank and yes, it is cummulative. Thank heavens. Those number would have been pretty frightening if they were for one week.

Those pediatric numbers are still so sad.

22 influenza-associated pediatric deaths for week 42; but 192 total for the year.

For comparison, these are the influenza associated pediatric deaths for previous years:

90 - 2008

77 - 2007

43 - 2006

45 - 2005

I assume the MMWR totals are based on a standard January - December Calendar year, whereas the annual flu season numbers that CDC publishes in the Flu Weekly is for September 1 - August 30th of each year....Is this correct?

P&I deaths are for the MMWR week, not YTD cumulative.

Here is week 1:

There were 987 P&I deaths that week. It is in January, so there are numerous diseases that will cause P&I deaths other than flu. Plus, if you look at the summer months you will still see a minimum of 500-600 P&I deaths, even in non-pandemic years.

Unless stated, the MMWR data is current week. (They do provide some cumulative data as well as historical comparison.)

If you use the same tortured math that gives us 36,000 flu deaths/year (children accounting for 1.35% of all deaths) then the 22 pediatric deaths in week 42 would indicate ~1630 total deaths in the same week. Which is 1000 more than the CDC reported.
