Hillcrest High head football coach dies of West Nile

SALT LAKE CITY ? Friends, family and students are mourning the death of Hillcrest High School's head football coach.

Coach Cazzie Brown was taken off life support and died Sunday night, according to officials from the Canyons School District. Brown was put on life support last week after contracting West Nile virus.

Originally, doctors thought it was solely meningitis, but after test results came back Monday afternoon, they learned that Brown contracted West Nile virus, which led to him getting meningitis, a family spokesperson said.

First SC West Nile Virus death reported in Anderson Co.

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
An individual in Anderson County has died due to West Nile Virus, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

DHEC officials said in 2017, the agency has confirmed seven human cases, 10 infected birds and 55 infected mosquito samples.

The death in Anderson County is the first in the state linked to West Nile Virus for 2017.

San Bernardino County reports first West Nile Virus death for 2017

The victim was described as an elderly western San Bernardino County male resident with serious health problems.

So far, there have been eight confirmed cases in San Bernadino County this year, up from six for the entire 2016 season. Two county residents died last year from the virus which is transmitted by mosquitos, the county health department said, in a statement.

The San Bernardino County death was the third in California this season.

DEFIANCE COUNTY, OH (WTOL) -
The Ohio Department of Health reports that a 74-year-old Defiance County man has died from West Nile virus.

This is the first West Nile death in Ohio for 2017.

ODH said the man had been hospitalized with encephalitis.

There were four West Nile deaths in Ohio in 2016.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (KKTV) - The first death in Colorado from the West Nile Virus this year has been confirmed in Fort Collins.

The deceased is one of four in Larimer County to have contracted the virus this year. Two of the ill reportedly have the most-serious, neuroinvasive form.

OKLAHOMA CITY – State health officials say Oklahoma has recorded its first death from West Nile virus this year.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health says the death occurred in Pottawatomie County. So far in 2017, instances of the illness have been reported in Bryan, Cleveland, Muskogee, Oklahoma, Pottawatomie and Tulsa counties.

BOSTON (AP) ? State health officials say a Bristol County man is hospitalized with the first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus this year.
No other information was given about the man except that he's in his 50s and was likely bitten by an infected mosquito in early to mid-August. The Department of Public Health is investigating to determine exactly where the exposure most likely occurred.

First Human West Nile Virus Death In Illinois For 2017

SPRINGFIELD ? The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first human West Nile virus-related death in Illinois for 2017. A Kankakee County resident who tested positive for West Nile virus died earlier this month.

?Although we will soon start seeing cooler weather, West Nile virus is still a concern,? said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. ?It?s important for everyone to continue taking precautions like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, and staying indoors between dusk and dawn.?

IDPH reported the first human case of West Nile virus in Illinois this year on July 20, 2017 and IDPH is currently reporting 37 human cases. Last year there were 155 human cases, including six deaths.

Suffolk County Confirms First West Nile Virus-Related Death in 7 Years

A Long Island resident who died this month has positive for West Nile virus, marking Suffolk County's first such death in nearly a decade.
The Town of Islip resident, whose name has not been released, was over the age of 50 and began experiencing symptoms associated with the mosquito-borne infection in late August, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health. The person was hospitalized in mid-September and died a few days later.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? Health officials on the Georgia coast are reporting a fatal case of mosquito-borne West Nile virus.

The Coastal Health District of the Georgia Department of Public Health said in a news release Monday that officials have confirmed one death of a person infected with West Nile in Chatham County, which includes Savannah. Two other human cases of West Nile have also been confirmed in the county, where West Nile was reported in mosquito populations in July.

California Modesto Junior College Professor Dies following Complications from West Nile Virus

MODESTO -- A well-liked Modesto Junior College human services professor died last week following complications from West Nile Virus.

Friends say Dr. Kimberly Kennard developed flu-like symptoms during the fall 2015 semester and was in and out of the hospital for months. That December, Kennard began having cognitive issues but doctors didn't know what was causing them.

Then, in February 2016, doctors at UC Davis Medical Center say she tested positive for West Nile.

MEIGS COUNTY ? Meigs County?s first suspected case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed by the Ohio Department of Health lab.

This confirmed case has resulted in a fatality, according to a news release from the Meigs County Health Department.

No information has been released regarding the age or gender of the deceased or the date of the death.
