BROOKLINE
State public health officials have raised the West Nile virus alert level to high in Brookline and surrounding municipalities, after two people have died from the disease in neighboring communities.
A ?high? alert level means ?more people may get infected with West Nile virus in your areas,? according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health website.
On Oct. 1, state officials announced a Suffolk County woman in her 90s had succumbed to the illness in a hospital. She was the seventh human case of WNV in the state this year. There were six cases in 2014.
On Sept. 29, officials said a Suffolk County man in his 60s died of the virus.

Deaths from West Nile virus in California in 2015 have already set a record for one year in the state, and almost half of those deaths have occurred in Los Angeles County, according to health data released.

Thirty-two people have died of the virus so far this year. Thirty-one died in all of last year, the most since the California Department of Public Health began recording cases in 2003, and the most in any U.S. state.

The state number is expected to still rise through November, health officials warned.

Mosquitoes are still causing problems in Southwest Louisiana

By Candy Rodriguez

It's November, but you'd never guess it by the still-thriving mosquito population in Southwest Louisiana. In fact, the area is in the midst of a full-blown mosquito outbreak.

"The outbreak is not only here in Southwest Louisiana but it's across the state," said Scott Willis, director of Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control.
...
"We have traps and people that are out in the field taking landing rates. We had airplanes flying last night; both of our planes move and we have trucks that are scheduled. Normally what we do is go and check; we get service requests, people call us and we go to their homes and check around. Then we decide and look where the worst problems are and go from there," he said.

Colby Colona, president of the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association, is in Lake Charles for the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association's 58th annual meeting, "We have 60-65 different species, roughly, in Louisiana," she said.

This year, Louisiana has experienced 61 human cases of West Nile and five deaths....
