West Nile in Texas – August 25, 2015

DSHS is reminding people about the danger posed by West Nile illness and encouraging people to protect themselves. People should reduce their risk of exposure to the mosquito-borne virus that causes it by eliminating standing water and other mosquito breeding areas; making sure door, porch and window screens are in good condition; wearing long sleeves and long pants outdoors when possible and using an insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus/para-menthane-diol.
As many as 80 percent of people who contract the virus will have no symptoms at all. Almost all others will have West Nile fever with symptoms like headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. A very small minority will develop West Nile neuroinvasive disease, a life threatening illness that can cause neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis.
One case in 2015 has resulted in death. In 2014, there were 379 human cases of West Nile illness in Texas, including six deaths.

JACKSON, Miss. ? Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) confirms the death of an Attala County resident from West Nile virus (WNV), the first human death from WNV in 2015. Four new human cases have also been reported in Montgomery, Rankin (2), and Simpson counties, bringing the total for 2015 to 18 cases.

So far this year, cases have been reported in Adams, Attala, Covington, Forrest (2), Hinds (3), Madison (2), Montgomery, Rankin (5) and Simpson (2) counties.
The MSDH only reports laboratory-confirmed cases to the public. In 2014, Mississippi had 43 WNV cases and seven deaths.
Symptoms of WNV infection are often mild and may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs reminds Mississippians that the majority of WNV cases are reported in August and September, so it is important to protect yourself.
The MSDH suggests the following precautions to protect yourself and your environment from mosquito-borne illnesses:
  • Use a recommended mosquito repellent that contains DEET while you are outdoors.
  • Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
  • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
For more information on mosquito-borne illnesses, visit the MSDH website at www.HealthyMS.com/westnile.

NC DHHS Reports First Death of 2015 from West Nile Virus in North Carolina

Sep 8, 2015
Raleigh, NC
Health officials from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Public Health encourage residents and visitors to take precautions to prevent mosquito-borne illness following a death from West Nile virus infection. This is North Carolina's first death and first confirmed case in 2015. Further details regarding the deceased are not available to protect patient confidentiality.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus infection usually cause either no symptoms or mild, flu-like illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention most people (70-80%) who become infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms. However, it can cause more serious conditions, including encephalitis, meningitis and meningoencephalitis in about 1 percent of cases which can be fatal. West Nile virus is one of several mosquito-borne viruses known to occur in North Carolina, in addition to eastern equine encephalitis and La Crosse encephalitis. There have been 13 cases reported from 2010 through 2014.

"This is a tragic reminder that these infections, though relatively rare, can be fatal," said Dr. Carl Williams, State Public Health Veterinarian. "We see most cases of mosquito-borne illness in the months from August through October but you can still enjoy your time outdoors by following some basic control measures."

DHHS recommends the following precautions:

Use mosquito repellent that contains DEET (or equivalent) when exposed to mosquitoes. Use caution when applying to children.
Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside and if possible, use air conditioning.
Reduce mosquito breeding by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires and birdbaths at least once a week.
For more information on prevention of mosquito bites visit: http://epi.publichealth.nc.gov/cd/arbo/prevent.html (link is external) and http://www.cdc.gov/westnile/faq/repellent.html (link is external).

[h=2]West Nile in Texas ? September 8, 2015[/h] DSHS is reminding people about the danger posed by West Nile illness and encouraging people to protect themselves.
Five cases in 2015 have resulted in death. In 2014, there were 379 human cases of West Nile illness in Texas, including six deaths.

Texas [h=2]West Nile in Texas ? September 15, 2015[/h] DSHS is reminding people about the danger posed by West Nile illness and encouraging people to protect themselves.
Five cases in 2015 have resulted in death. In 2014, there were 379 human cases of West Nile illness in Texas, including six deaths.

A 70-year-old Slidell man who was diagnosed with West Nile virus on Sept. 14 died Thursday morning, according to St. Tammany Parish Coroner Charles Preston.

The patient had been admitted to a local hospital on Sept. 7 with signs of a stroke. His cause of death, however, was the virus and an end-stage stroke, according to the coroner.

Preston said it was not possible to determine if the two conditions were related, but the patient had the neuroinvasive form of West Nile, which affects the central nervous system.
