1st Utahn diagnosed with West Nile fever

SALT LAKE COUNTY ? The first human case of West Nile virus in Utah for 2014 was announced by the Salt Lake County Health Department Monday.

The person was determined to have West Nile fever, according to officials. They said it is a less severe form of the virus spread by infected mosquitoes...

This is the first WNV human case from Sutter County this year.

7 Cases of West Nile in Iowa

SIOUXLAND - The Iowa Department of Health has confirmed seven cases of West Nile Virus in humans this year in the state, including cases in six Siouxland counties: Woodbury, Clay, Crawford, Monona and Plymouth, with another possible case in Sac County.

Two of those cases required hospitalization, but there have been no deaths from the virus this year...

Oklahoma reports four cases of West Nile virus
Oklahoma health officials have reported four confirmed cases of West Nile virus. There have been two people hospitalized and two people treated, but no deaths in the state this year.

O.C. reports 2nd West Nile death this year, 8th so far in the state

A 70-year-old Huntington Beach man has become the second person in Orange County to die from West Nile virus this year, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency.

There now have been eight West Nile deaths in the state, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Aside from the Orange County deaths, all have been in Northern California.

San Fernando Man Dies from West Nile Virus (California)

A San Fernando man died from complications of West Nile virus, becoming the first person in Los Angeles County to die from the virus this season, health officials announced today.

The victim was a man in his 60s, and he was hospitalized when he died, according to the county Department of Public Health.

Health officials said 20 people in the county have been diagnosed with West Nile virus, including three people who showed no symptoms but were identified when they donated blood...

The Health Department only reports laboratory-confirmed cases to the public. In 2013, Mississippi had 45 WNV cases and five deaths.

DHH issues a weekly Arbovirus Surveillance Report that details cases detected thus far by parish. This week's new infections include six neuroinvasive disease cases in Bossier (1), Caddo (3), East Baton Rouge (1) and St. Tammany (1) parishes. There were 10 new cases of West Nile fever; Ascension (1), Bossier (1), Caddo (2), East Baton Rouge (2), Livingston (2), Ouachita (1) and St. Tammany (1) parishes, and three new asymptomatic cases in Caddo (1), Livingston (1) and Rapides (1) parishes. "We are still confirming new human cases of West Nile virus in Louisiana," said DHH State Epidemiologist Dr. Raoult Ratard. "It is imperative that people protect themselves and their children from being bitten by mosquitos. That's the only way you can be sure that you won't become infected with West Nile virus or any other mosquito-borne diseases."

Humans contract West Nile when they are bitten by mosquitoes infected with the virus. When people are infected with West Nile, the virus will affect them one of three ways. West Nile neuroinvasive disease is the most serious type, infecting the brain and spinal cord. Neuroinvasive disease can lead to death, paralysis and brain damage. The milder viral infection is West Nile fever, in which people experience flu-like symptoms. The majority of people who contract West Nile will be asymptomatic, which means they show no symptoms. These cases are typically detected through blood donations or in the course of other routine medical tests.

About 90 percent of all cases are asymptomatic, while about 10 percent will develop West Nile fever. Only a very small number of infected individuals will show the serious symptoms associated with the neuroinvasive disease. Residents who are 65 years old and older are at higher risk for complications, but everyone is at risk for infection.

Last year, Louisiana saw 34 cases of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease in the state, which was down from 2002's high of 204 cases of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease. DHH has been tracking West Nile Virus for more than a decade, and statistics about its occurrence in Louisiana can be found online at www.dhh.louisiana.gov/fightthebite.

That brings the state's total so far this year to 24 cases, including three deaths.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) ? The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on Monday confirmed the city?s first human cases of the West Nile virus this season.

Health officials said Monday the virus was detected in five New York City residents, all over the age of 50. Two patients were from Brooklyn, and one each was from Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan.

Three of the patients were hospitalized and have since been discharged. The other two cases did not require hospitalization...
