BATON ROUGE, La.?The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) has confirmed the state's second West Nile virus death this season. The death occured this week in Ouachita Parish. The state's first death was last month in Rapides Parish. DHH is reporting six new West Nile virus cases this week, bringing this year's total number of cases to 45. This week's new infections include four cases of neuroinvasive disease, with three cases from Ouachita Parish, and one case from Lafayette parish, and two cases of West Nile fever, with one case each from St. Landry and St. Martin parishes.

Humans contract West Nile when they are bitten by mosquitoes infected with the virus. When people are infected with West Nile, the virus will affect them one of three ways. West Nile neuroinvasive disease is the most serious type, infecting the brain and spinal cord. Neuroinvasive disease can lead to death, paralysis and brain damage. The milder viral infection is West Nile fever, in which people experience flu-like symptoms. The majority of people who contract West Nile will be asymptomatic, which means they show no symptoms. These cases are typically detected through blood donations or in the course of other routine medical tests.

About 90 percent of all cases are asymptomatic, while about 10 percent will develop West Nile fever. Only a very small number of infected individuals will show the serious symptoms associated with the neuroinvasive disease. Residents who are 65 years old and older are at higher risk for complications, but everyone is at risk for infection.

Last year, Louisiana reported 160 cases of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease in the state, which is down from 2002's high of 204 cases of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease. DHH has been tracking West Nile virus for more than a decade, and statistics about its occurrence in Louisiana can be found in DHH's weekly Arbovirus Surveillance Report, found on line at www.dhh.louisiana.gov/fightthebite.

This year, the state's neuroinvasive disease cases are as such, Ouachita Parish -13 cases, Lafayette Parish - six cases, Caldwell Parish - three cases, Rapides Parish - three cases, Calcasieu Parish - one case, Livingston Parish - one case, St. Tammany Parish - one case.

State Health Department Reports Second West Nile Virus-Related Death in 2013
BISMARCK, N.D. ? The North Dakota Department of Health today announced the state?s second West Nile virus-related death in 2013. The individual was a man who resided in the southeastern region of North Dakota and was older than 60 years of age. He died while hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.
?This death is an unfortunate reminder that West Nile virus can be a very severe disease, especially for those older than 60 years of age,? said Alicia Lepp, epidemiologist with the North Dakota Department of Health. ?Until there is a hard frost to get rid of the remaining mosquito population, people should continue to take steps to prevent mosquito bites. Although the risk for infection is small, it is still there.?
To date, 101 human West Nile virus (WNV) cases have been reported in 28 counties this year. In 2012, North Dakota had 89 WNV cases and one WNV-related death. Of the 101 human cases reported this year, 50 percent have developed the more severe form of WNV disease that causes neurologic infection. Recovery from severe WNV disease may take several weeks or months. Some of the neurologic effects may be permanent.
The symptoms of severe WNV illness can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, coma, paralysis and even death. People with these symptoms should see a health-care provider immediately.

OKLAHOMA CITY - According to new data released by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, three more Oklahomans have died since last week from West Nile Virus complications.
Two of those deaths were in Oklahoma County, and one was in Ellis County. Oklahoma County now has a total of three West Nile Virus deaths.


The report from the state health department shows Garfield County has one death due to the virus.

There have been 38 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus, which is up six from last week.

The City of Lubbock Health Department has confirmed the first death for West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease for 2013. The deceased is an adult over the age of 80 years who had a chronic medical condition and lived in ZIP code 79424. Less than 1% of people who are infected will develop a serious neurological illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues).

West Nile death reported in San Bernardino County (California)

Amid a rising number of West Nile virus cases and the first death of the year, San Bernardino County officials issued a warning Friday about the illness, which is spread by mosquitoes.

The name, age and gender of the person who died were not made public.

That brings the total number of West Nile deaths in Illinois to three for 2013, counting a Logan County man in his 80s who became ill in mid-August and a ?middle-aged? man from suburban Cook County whose death was reported by the state Sept. 16. All three deaths occurred in early September.

An Arlington man in his late 70s became the second West Nile death in Tarrant County since the season began in May, a health official said Wednesday.

The man, who died Saturday, had underlying medical issues, said Dr. Anita Kurian, associate director of Tarrant County Public Health. He was diagnosed in late September with West Nile neuroinvasive disease, which is the more severe form of the infection.

ARLINGTON (CBS 11 NEWS) ? An Arlington man is the first in that city to die from the West Nile virus. His is the second death recorded in Tarrant County this year.

County health officials are not identifying him, but family members tell us he is Charles Sheldon; they want the public to know how fast the virus can spread and how deady it can be.

West Nile Contributes to Death of Gem County Resident
Southwest District Health (SWDH) officials confirm that West Nile may have contributed to the recent death of a male residing in Gem County. This is the first death reported in the state for 2013.
“We know West Nile may have serious health consequences but it is particularly sad when it results in death,” said Bruce Krosch, District Director for Southwest District Health.
Symptoms of West Nile infection include fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash. More severe infections are marked by a rapid onset of a high fever, including headache, body aches, disorientation, neck stiffness, and tremors.
This year West Nile concentrated in five Southwest Idaho counties, including Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, and Washington, with 25 reported cases. A total of 39 cases have been reported statewide.
“With the shorter days and cooler nights, we hope West Nile is close to wrapping up for another season,” said Krosch.

While still grieving the loss of her husband, Margie Kulberg wants the community to know who her husband Ron was.
“I don’t want him to become the statistic because he was the first Idahoan to die of West Nile virus. I want people to know who he was. We have a story. He is not just a statistic,” she said.
Ron and Margie Kulberg and their family moved to the Sweet/Montour area from North Dakota only 16 months ago.

Health Officer Reminds All to Take Precautions Against Mosquitoes
Seventh confirmed death of West Nile Virus in LA County

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Health Officer today confirmed the seventh human death this year from West Nile virus (WNV) infection in Los Angeles County. This week three fatalities were confirmed; two men from South Central Los Angeles and one man from the San Fernando Valley; all had pre-existing health conditions and had been hospitalized at the time of death. To date this year, 139 WNV infections have been documented, including 21 asymptomatic blood donors.
"We continue to see increased transmission of this virus that can cause serious disease," said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. "Taking a few simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk of mosquito bites, the primary pathway to human infection. West Nile can appear anywhere in Los Angeles County, or around the state, and we are urging people to take precautions, such as getting rid of pools of stagnant water around their homes, and using a repellant containing DEET when outdoors in mosquito prone areas, especially around dawn or dusk."

In most years, the risk of WNV decreases by October. In 2012, WNV cases continued to be reported through late November. In October 2013, warm fall temperatures throughout Los Angeles County continue to support mosquito breeding and WNV transmission prolonging the season for WNV infection that could extend throughout November. This year, risk of infection has been especially elevated in the South Bay. Several mosquito abatement agencies in Southern California, including the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD), Los Angeles County West Vector Control District, Antelope Valley and the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District, have been cautioning residents that this year is a particularly active year for mosquitoes carrying WNV.

To date, 139 WNV infections have been reported in Los Angeles County. Of those who showed symptoms, 80% required hospitalization and 6% were fatal. As of October 17, 2013, WNV has been detected in 397 mosquito pools and 304 dead birds in Los Angeles County. The wide-ranging distribution of our human cases demonstrates that the virus can affect any location. Even though the vast majority of infected individuals do not show symptoms, or have a mild illness, those over 50 years of age and those with immunocompromising medical conditions are at increased risk of serious WNV infection that can affect the brain and spinal cord.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) has confirmed the state's fourth West Nile virus death this year. The death is from Ouachita Parish, the second death from Ouachita Parish this year. The state's health department is also confirming four new West Nile virus cases this week, bringing this year's total to 55 cases. This week's new infections include two cases of neuroinvasive disease, one each in Acadia and Rapides parishes, and two cases of West Nile fever, with one each in Bossier and Caddo parishes.

Humans contract West Nile when they are bitten by mosquitoes infected with the virus. When people are infected with West Nile, the virus will affect them one of three ways. West Nile neuroinvasive disease is the most serious type, infecting the brain and spinal cord. Neuroinvasive disease can lead to death, paralysis and brain damage. The milder viral infection is West Nile fever, in which people experience flu-like symptoms. The majority of people who contract West Nile will be asymptomatic, which means they show no symptoms. These cases are typically detected through blood donations or in the course of other routine medical tests.

About 90 percent of all cases are asymptomatic, while about 10 percent will develop West Nile fever. Only a very small number of infected individuals will show the serious symptoms associated with the neuroinvasive disease. Residents who are 65 years old and older are at higher risk for complications, but everyone is at risk for infection.

Last year, Louisiana reported 160 cases of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease in the state, which is down from 2002's high of 204 cases of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease. DHH has been tracking West Nile virus for more than a decade, and statistics about its occurrence in Louisiana can be found in DHH's weekly Arbovirus Surveillance Report, found on line at www.dhh.louisiana.gov/fightthebite.

Here's a parish-by-parish breakdown of this year's neuroinvasive disease cases; Ouachita, 14; Lafayette, 9; Rapides, 4; Caldwell, 3; Acadia, 1; Calcasieu, 1; Livingston 1; and St. Tammany 1. The state has reported four West Nile virus deaths so far this year.
