US swine flu deaths surpass 1,000

By MIKE STOBBE (AP) – 1 hour ago

ATLANTA — Federal health officials say swine flu is more widespread now than it's ever been.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there as much illness now as the winter peak of regular flu seasons. CDC officials said Friday that swine flu has resulted in more than 1,000 deaths so far.

Public demand for the new swine flu vaccine has caused long lines and frustration in several parts of the country. But worries about flu has also prompted record interest in seasonal flu vaccine as well.

About 60 million people have been vaccinated already — an unprecedented number for October. Most seasonal flu shots usually aren't given until later in the fall.

CDC officials say nearly 100 pediatric swine flu deaths have been reported.

Doesn't anyone disagree.. That is such an understatement! Shouldn't it be surpasses 3000?

They start counting at August 30, 2009, the start of the 2009 - 2010 flu season. Also, they did state 'more than' 1000 deaths ;)

593 before Aug 30 + 411 after Aug 30 = 1004 lab confirmed fatalities.

Ignores at least 2,416 syndromic deaths.

And he probably should have qualified his statement that the 1,000 are lab confirmed. The many, many others are probables.

I think the actual number is unknown. It is thousands. We will never really know because the virus may weaken people who survive pandemic flu only to succumb weeks later to pre-existing conditions. These people will never be quantified as flu related.

And many will believe that's the true number of deaths and use the 36K figure to dismiss this virus as being nothing to be concerned over.

It's sad.
