On May 22, 2023, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed HPAI H5N5 fully Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b virus in a wild great black-backed gull (Larus marinus). The bird was found dead in Suffolk County, New York, and was sampled by the NY Department of Conservation on March 30, 2023. The sample was initially tested at the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell University (a NAHLN laboratory), and the non-negative sample was forwarded to NVSL. NVSL identified the HPAI H5N5 from whole genome sequencing that apparently reassorted prior to reaching North American flyways. On May 26, 2023, NVSL confirmed four additional cases of HPAI H5N5 Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b virus in wild great black-backed gulls from Barnstable and Plymouth Counties, Massachusetts. Two detections were from gulls that were brought into rehab facilities at the end of January, and two detections were collected from a die-off of great black-backed gulls in the beginning of February. All four samples were initially tested at Tufts University. Tufts forwarded the non-negative samples to NVSL, and NVSL identified H5N5 from whole genome sequencing. The detections in both NY and MA are of fully Eurasian lineage and most closely related to the HPAI H5N5 virus reported in wild birds and mammals in Canada earlier this year. The movement of this virus from Europe to North America likely occurred as great black-backed gulls and other migratory birds moved from their breeding grounds in Europe to their wintering grounds along the Atlantic Coast. On June 5, 2023, NVSL confirmed EA/AM reassortant HPAI H5N6 virus in a wild bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) from Washington County, Minnesota. The eagle was sampled by a wildlife rehabilitation center on May 8, 2023, and the sample was initially screened at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (a NAHLN lab). The non-negative sample was forwarded to NVSL, where it was identified as HPAI H5N6 from whole genome sequencing. The virus is a reassortant of genotype B1.3 with a North American N6 gene. According to article 10.4.1.4 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Member Country should not impose bans on the international trade of poultry commodities in response to notification of infection with any Influenza A viruses in birds other than poultry.
