US - News: Increasing violence as a health and safety threat - 2022/2023

Some more information about the Detroit shooting. The only survivor and his dog were saved because good neighbors came out and confronted the shooter with a gun of their own. The shooter fled then since he valued his own life. He had been shooting the previous victims over and over again until he was sure they were dead.
There is also an interview with the doctor who the mom of 5 worked for. She was an exceptional employee, full of positive energy and caring for her co-workers.

After Eliza Fletcher's death, women share their own stories of running alone
Joyce Orlando Memphis Commercial Appeal

Eliza Fletcher's remains were found on Monday just four days after she went missing on a morning run.

The 34-year-old teacher was abducted as she exercised on the University of Memphis campus around 4:20 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2. As news of the story spread across the nation, women and fellow runners took to Twitter to defend Fletcher after criticism for her choice of the time she went running surfaced.

Fletcher appears to have been a dedicated runner for years. In 2019, she finished the St. Jude marathon with a time of 3:26:09, a fast enough time to qualify for the Boston Marathon, one of the most elite marathons in the world. Out of all the women running the St. Jude marathon that year, she finished 22nd.

Shannon Brandt allegedly told officials in North Dakota that he hit the recent high school graduate because he was part of a 'Republican extremist group'
By Adam Sabes | Fox News
CARRINGTON, N.D. — During its homecoming game, the North Dakota high school where Cayler Ellingson recently graduated held a moment of silence in remembrance of the 18-year-old who was killed on Sunday after a political argument.

The moment of silence was held during Carrington High School's homecoming football game on Friday night. Ellingson graduated from the high school in 2022.

Ellingson was killed early Sunday morning in McHenry, North Dakota after Shannon Brandt, 41, allegedly admitted to using his SUV to hit Ellingson, who later died at a local hospital.

According to an affidavit, Brandt told the state first responders’ radio that he struck the pedestrian with an SUV because the "pedestrian was threatening him," adding that he thought Ellingson was part of a "Republican extremist group."

MCHENRY, N.D. — According to court papers, it was not an accident but apparently a politically motivated attack.

The fatal vehicle-pedestrian incident happened early Sunday morning, Sept. 18, in McHenry, North Dakota, about 120 miles northwest of Fargo and 54 miles north of Jamestown.

Shannon Brandt, 41, had his first court appearance via zoom from the Stutsman County Jail Monday, Sept. 19.WDAY

Prosecutors allege moments before he was killed, 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson called his mom to come rescue him because 41-year-old Shannon Brandt was chasing him in the city of McHenry, where the street dance had just wrapped up.

By the time she could get there, her son was dead...

New Orleans murders surpass 2021 total with two months left in the year

NEW ORLEANS —
...
Two months remain in the year, and the number of murders in New Orleans has already surpassed the 2021 total — a figure which in itself marked a 17-year high. The city has averaged 23 murders per month in 2022...

"We're looking at 270-275 murders by the time the end of the year comes," he said. "That's enormous."
...
The current total of 223 places New Orleans among the nation's most murderous cities.

"We have seen those numbers go up from 2019 to 2022, and we are at a high water mark," said Rafael C. Goyeneche III, president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. "Every year for the last three years has been a high water mark."

Nobody can conclusively say what's driving the violent crime surge in New Orleans and other cities around the country, though pandemic-related instability, more guns and fewer police are among criminologists' theories.

Goyeneche and many others cite the city's depleted police force...

This was a Navy veteran and his wife. Their neighbor was renting an RV out to the alleged killer who had meth and weapon theft charges/convictions. The killer shot through the sliding glass doors to their bedroom during the night. They were found in garbage cans outside. After repeat offender's arrest in death of Kitsap Co. couple, friends, family in mourning
by Tammy Mutasa, KOMO News reporter
Monday, August 22nd 2022

OLALLA, Wash. — Friends and family of a beloved Kitsap County couple killed last week are mourning their loss amid startling new revelations about the suspected killer who was released on bond at the time of the slayings.

Investigators said Shaun Rose, 40, has been charged with murder and burglary in the deaths of Steve and Mina Shulz, both 51. He was being held Monday on a $5 million bond until his scheduled arraignment that is set for Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Kitsap County court.

A memorial of kind words and flowers now marks a couple’s dream that was cut brutally short.

The couple were just a month away from opening East 2 West Brewery, a goal of theirs after growing their popular craft beer business on the side.

Deputies found the bodies of the two after they were violently murdered on their property on Shady Glen Lane last Thursday, a discovery made after their daughter had gone to check on them and found blood and signs of a forced entry...

Gay bar shooting suspect facing murder, hate crime charges
By THOMAS PEIPERT and JESSE BEDAY NNovember 21, 2022 GMT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The man suspected of killing five people and injuring others at a gay bar in Colorado Springs is facing murder and hate crime charges, according to online court records obtained Monday.

Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, faces five murder charges and five charges of committing a bias-motivated crime causing bodily injury, the records show.

A law enforcement official said the suspect used an AR-15-style semiautomatic weapon in Saturday night’s attack, but a handgun and additional ammunition magazines also were recovered. The official could not discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Club Q on its Facebook page thanked the “quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

Already questions were being raised about why authorities didn’t seek to take Aldrich’s guns away from him in 2021, when he was arrested after his mother reported he threatened her with a homemade bomb and other weapons.

Though authorities at the time said no explosives were found, gun control advocates are asking why police didn’t try to trigger Colorado’s “red flag” law, which would have allowed authorities to seize the weapons his mother says he had. There’s also no public record prosecutors ever moved forward with felony kidnapping and menacing charges against Aldrich...

2 Hawaiian men found guilty of hate crime for attacking white homeowner

Two Native Hawaiian men were found guilty of a hate crime for attacking a white homeowner in 2014 in Maui.

On Nov. 17, a federal jury found Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi, 32, and Levi Aki, Jr., 33, guilty for their “racially motivated attacks” on Christopher Kunzelman when he attempted to move into a home he had purchased in the neighborhood of Kahakuloa.
...

“You’ve got the wrong f*cking color skin,” Alo-Kaonohi said as he dragged his index finger along Kunzelman’s jaw.

Alo-Kaonohi then struck the man in the head with a roofing shovel, causing him to bleed from the back of his head. As the victim was packing up his belongings, the defendants continued to attack him.

Aki reportedly head butted Kunzelman before striking him in the face with the shovel again. The beating caused the victim to lose consciousness and gave him a concussion. The defendants then continued to kick him in the side while he was unconscious, breaking two of his ribs.

“No white man is ever going to live here,” one of the Maui men said during the beating.

Critical evidence of the incident was captured on Kunzelman’s car’s cameras...

A 27-year-old Bremerton man was charged Friday with first-degree burglary and first-degree assault after he was accused of entering a home in the middle of the night and striking a Bremerton couple multiple times in the head and face with an upholstery hammer while they were sleeping.
James Aaron Adkinson, 27, is accused of entering a home in the 1500 block of Perry Avenue early Friday morning and striking a couple with a "tack hammer" that was found by officers searching the premises following the incident, according to court documents.
Police were called just before 2 a.m. and responded to the home, where they found one of the victims, a 69-year-old male, holding a handgun and bleeding profusely from the face, according to a probable cause statement. The male victim said he and his wife, 62, were sleeping upstairs when the suspect began striking their heads and faces several times with what they described as a blunt object...

Violent 24 hours puts New Orleans on track for highest homicide rate in the nation

It would be the first time New Orleans has had the highest homicide rate in the nation since 2011.

NEW ORLEANS — Crime and gun violence continue to rise in New Orleans in the last few days of the year. From Wednesday to Thursday, there were at least 10 shootings, with at least one being fatal. According to crime data analyst, Jeff Asher, New Orleans is on set to have the highest murder rate in the nation, but the homicide rate isn’t the only crime statistic that’s peaking.

Asher reports that 37 women have been murdered in New Orleans this year, the highest since 1996.

Misty Frye, Director of Client Services with the New Orleans Family Justice Center says we’re “in crisis mode,” adding the violence against women is becoming more severe.

“What you would normally see is the normal slap, kick, punch has now turned into gun shots, using vehicles to run you over. It’s happening more often than it used to. We used to go months before seeing a gun shot victim, now we can get five in a week that’s a lot,” Frye said.
