Another violence interrupter killed in Baltimore as community reels from gun violence
DaShawn McGrier is the third Safe Streets member to be killed in a year.

A man who worked on the front lines of preventing gun violence in Baltimore, Maryland, was shot and killed on Wednesday night in a quadruple shooting on E. Monument Street, in the McElderry Park neighborhood.

Baltimore native DaShawn McGrier, 29, worked as a violence interrupter for Safe Streets and is the third member of the organization to be shot and killed in the last year.

"[DaShawn] was passionate about his community, and was working hard to make that community safer for his family, friends and neighbors," said Meg Ward, Vice President of Strategic Growth and Community Partnerships at Living Classrooms -- a nonprofit that operates two of the 10 Safe Streets sites in the city, including McElderry Park. "He was a son, he was a father, he was a partner. He was a brother, he was a devoted and present father to his child.

According to Ward, McGrier was having a conversation with the other two victims while working at his post on Monument Street when the shooting occurred.

"Apparently, a tow truck came around the corner and they just shot up the block," Ward said.

BPD identified the other victims as 28-year-old Tyrone Allen and 24-year-old Hassan Smith. A spokesperson told ABC News Friday that "no arrests have been made at this time."...

Woman Returns to New York Subway Where She Survived Hammer Attack

Dr. Nina Rothschild was beaten over the head with a hammer 14 times by a man she did not know after she entered a Queens subway station three months ago. She suffered a fractured skull and a broken hand and will need months of physical therapy.

For the first time since she was severely injured in a hammer attack in a New York City subway station, Dr. Nina Rothschild returned to the scene of the crime.
A scientist with the New York City Health Department, Rothschild was leaving work when she was struck by a person she’d never met.
Surveillance footage captured the moment she was beaten over the head with a hammer 14 times as she entered the station in Queens three months ago. But Rothschild, 57, doesn’t need the footage to remind her of that day’s events; she remembers every agonizing moment of the traumatic encounter.
“I was assaulted right over there,” she said to Inside Edition.
“I remember that I was just starting to head down to the train station, and somebody started hitting me over the head with what I thought at the time was a baseball bat,” she said.
...

Rothschild used to ride the subway every day but after surviving a traumatizing attack, as well as following the news of a mass shooting on a Manhattan-bound N train Brooklyn earlier this week that left 10 shot and 19 others injured, she now takes Ubers.

“I am not planning to take the subway for a while,” she said.

A tabernacle was stolen and an angel statue was beheaded at a Brooklyn church

May 30, 202210:11 PM ET

The Associated Press

Police say someone busted into the altar at a New York City church, stole a $2 million gold tabernacle and removed the head from a statue of an angel at some point late last week.

The incident happened between 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, known as the "Notre Dame" of Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood.

The church was closed for construction at the time. Camera recordings from the church's security system were also stolen, the church's pastor said.

The Diocese of Brooklyn called it "a brazen crime of disrespect and hate."...

DOJ urged to act after Jane's Revenge declares 'open season' on pro-life organizations
By Ryan Foley, Christian Post Reporter

The group had previously called for the "disbanding of anti-choice establishments, fake clinics, and violent anti-choice groups within the next thirty days" in a manifesto published last month.
Pro-life leaders and lawmakers are calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the wave of firebombings and vandalism targeting churches and pro-life pregnancy centers as a radical abortion activist group declared "open season" on pro-lifers.
...

"Your thirty days expired yesterday," Jane's Revenge stated in the communique published on the anarchist website Abolition Media Tuesday. "We offered an honourable way out. You could have walked away. Now the leash is off. And we will make it as hard as possible for your campaign of oppression to continue."

The group recalled "how easy and fun it is to attack," listing off all the acts of vandalism it has claimed responsibility for in the past month, which includes Madison, Wisconsin; Fort Collins, Colorado; Reisertown, Massachusetts; Olympia, Washington; Lynwood, Washington; Asheville, North Carolina; Buffalo, New York; Frederick, Maryland; Denton, Texas and Portland, Oregon.

The group vowed that "from here forward, any anti-choice group who closes their doors, and stops operating will no longer be a target."

"But until you do, it's open season, and we know where your operations are. The infrastructure of the enslavers will not survive," the communique reads. "We will never stop, back down, slow down, or retreat. We did not want this; but it is upon us, and so we must deal with it proportionally. We exist in confluence and solidarity with all others in the struggle for complete liberation."

The group indicated that additional vandalism would extend beyond acts "easily cleaned up as fire and graffiti."...

A man from Portland, Oregon, who is facing a slew of charges for allegedly attacking a Japanese family over the weekend has been re-arrested after failing to appear in court for his arraignment on Wednesday.

Dylan J. Kesterson, 34, was first arrested shortly after the alleged incident occurred along Portland’s Eastbank Esplanade on Saturday afternoon. Kesterson allegedly punched a 36-year-old man and his 5-year-old daughter because he thought they were Japanese, according to police.

Paul Best - Wednesday
...

"You guys are only hearing about me because I'm an Olympian," she continued. ‘This is absolute insanity’: Dozens of ATVs, 4-wheelers, dirt bikes swarming Houston streets cause road disturbance, complaints to HPD

A Montrose woman had to stop and pull over on the side of Alabama Street after being surrounded by ATVs and dirt bikes while on her way to the grocery store Sunday.

“This is absolute insanity,” she said in a video she recorded during the encounter. “Nobody can go anywhere.”

She asked us not to identify her, sharing an experience she’s never seen during her more than three years in Houston.

“They kind of just took over all the lanes of traffic [and] were doing wheelies, and swerving around,” she said.

Another group was captured on video going through downtown last week.

“It looked like 100 of them out there, so it looked like something out of a movie,” said Frank Lopez, who shot the video from his third-floor office at Rusk and Milam Streets. “We want to keep it safe, to where, you know, where when someone brings up the Skyline District, they’re not like, oh, ‘That’s where that thing happened with those riders.’”

He said he’s starting to see the groups of riders more often...

The rampage started before dawn. A mother of 5 waiting for her bus to take her to her medical office job was killed, along with a young man and another woman, both at different locations. The survivor and his dog were lucky to have neighbors that ran off the shooter.

Fed up with homelessness, Castro District merchants threaten to withhold city taxes
By Shawn Chitnis
August 26, 2022 / 8:53 PM / CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) -- Members of the Castro Merchants Association in San Francisco said they may be willing to stop paying local taxes and license fees if city agencies do not improve their response to people in need which, they say, has allowed an increase crime over the past four years.

"It's gotten to a point now where it's gotten really tough for any small business owner to successfully run a business in the Castro and this is our call out to the city to do something," said Dave Karraker, co-president of Castro Merchants Association and co-owner of MX3 Fitness. "Every year we pay the city taxes and we pay the city licensing fees to operate a business in this city and, if they're unable to fulfill their obligations for that money we're paying, then we're going to take action."...
