A possible case of monkeypox was being investigated in New York City after a patient with symptoms arrived at Bellevue Hospital, health officials said Thursday afternoon.

The city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said their health lab will conduct a preliminary test for monkeypox. If the results are positive the samples will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation.

The patient is being cared for with all isolation protocols in place at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue...
 
CDC monitors 6 people in US for possible rare monkeypox, says public ‘should not be concerned’

... Currently, the CDC is monitoring six people in the United States for possible monkeypox infections after they sat near an infected traveler who had symptoms while on a flight from Nigeria to the United Kingdom in early May.

Separately, CDC officials also are investigating a case of monkeypox confirmed in a man in Massachusetts who had recently traveled to Canada. And the New York City Health Department is investigating a possible infection in a patient currently at Bellevue Hospital.

“The Health Department’s Public Health Lab will conduct preliminary tests, which — if positive — will be sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmatory testing,” the department said in a press release on Thursday.

... As for the six people currently being monitored for potential monkeypox, they all “are healthy, with no symptoms and are considered at low risk for monkeypox,” Pearson wrote, adding that none were seated next to the ill passenger and none had direct contact.

A New York City patient tested positive for a family of viruses that monkeypox belongs to, health officials said Friday, but it was still unclear if the person was infected with the rare disease.

Two patients had been under investigation by the city’s health department for possibly carrying the virus, which has been spreading around the western world “within sexual networks”, according to officials.

One possible case of monkeypox in the city was ruled out, while the other person tested positive for “Orthopoxvirus, the family of viruses to which monkeypox belongs,” the health department said in a statement.

The patient was in isolation and presumed to be positive while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determines if the person does indeed have the virus. Local health officials are carrying out contact tracing in the meantime, they said.

Health officials said masks were effective at preventing the spread of monkeypox, which produces skin lesions and leaves patients with flu symptoms.

“As a precaution, any New Yorkers who experience flu-like illness with swelling of the lymph nodes and rashes on the face and body should contact their health care provider,” New York City health officials wrote in a press release.

Health Department Update on Person Diagnosed with Presumed Monkeypox in New York City


May 26, 2022 — The Health Department has identified one New Yorker who has been presumptively diagnosed with monkeypox. While CDC tests did not conclusively identify the monkeypox virus, earlier tests detected orthopoxvirus. The monkeypox virus is an orthopoxvirus, and the presentation of this case was consistent with disease caused by monkeypox. This will be treated as a probable case and the Health Department will continue contact tracing.

The investigation was initiated following a report from an astute provider. The Health Department continues to work with health care providers to investigate other reports, and it is possible additional cases of monkeypox may be identified.

Most New Yorkers are not at risk of infection with monkeypox. Monkeypox is rare but can spread through close prolonged contact with an infected person or animal. This might include contact with the skin lesions, body fluids, or sharing clothes or other materials that have been used by someone who is infectious, and also through respiratory droplets in prolonged face-to-face contact.

As a precaution, any New Yorkers who experience flu-like illness with swelling of lymph nodes and rash occurring on the face and body should contact their healthcare provider.

State Department of Health Update On Case of Probable Monkeypox In New York City

Albany, N.Y. (May 26, 2022) – The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), working with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH), today updated New Yorkers on an individual diagnosed with confirmed orthopoxvirus, presumed monkeypox – which will be treated as a probable monkeypox case.
As reported by NYCDOHMH, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tests did not conclusively identify the monkeypox virus, earlier tests detected orthopoxvirus. The monkeypox virus belongs to the orthopoxvirus family, and the presentation of this case was consistent with disease caused by monkeypox. NYCDOHMH, as the lead of this investigation, will continue contact tracing.
The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), in partnership with local and federal public health authorities, will continue to learn more from the presumptive positive case and communicate openly with New Yorkers.
Monkeypox is a rare viral illness that does not usually cause serious illness, but can result in hospitalization or death. Monkeypox typically begins with a flu-like illness and swelling of the lymph nodes and progresses to a rash on the face and body. Most infections last two to four weeks.
Those who experience symptoms consistent with monkeypox, such as characteristic rashes or lesions, should contact their health care provider for a risk assessment. This includes anyone who traveled to countries where monkeypox cases have been reported or has had contact with a someone who has a similar rash or received a diagnosis of suspected or confirmed monkeypox.

New York City health officials are reporting a total of seven cases of monkeypox, a rare illness that has become a growing concern in the U.S. following an outbreak in Europe.

The Department of Health announced late Friday that they had identified two additional cases, which still need to be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

New York now has nine confirmed cases of monkeypox, according to the state's health department, including the first case to be found outside of NYC.

The number of cases in the city has gone up from just two on June 1 (less than a week ago), to eight as of Tuesday, the New York State Department of Health announced. The other monkeypox case was found in Sullivan County.

Each of the cases are confirmed to be of orthopoxvirus; The monkeypox virus belongs to the orthopoxvirus family.

"As the risk for monkeypox remains low, we urge New Yorkers to be alert and seek care if you have symptoms consistent with monkeypox, as we continue to learn more about this virus," said State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett. Health officials said the unusual outbreak afflicting New York, and more than a dozen other states across the U.S., has reached at least 23 people in the city, with two recent cases detected in Westchester and Sullivan counties.

The latest number from the city health department jump four cases from the 19 presumed monkeypox cases reported days earlier.

The individuals tested positive for orthopoxvirus, the family of viruses to which monkeypox belongs, and though confirmation comes from the CDC, the federal agency and local ones say it's important to treat a confirmed orthopoxvirus case as part of the current monkeypox outbreak at this time.

Hundreds line up to get monkeypox vaccine in New York City

NEW YORK -- Hundreds of people lined up for monkeypox vaccinations Thursday in Chelsea.

Demand was so high that it overwhelmed capacity and forced the city cut off walk-in appointments, CBS2's Nick Caloway reported.

A long line formed outside the Chelsea Sexual Health Clinic after city health officials urged anyone who may have had a recent exposure to moneypox to come and get the vaccine.

Almost immediately after the site opened, city officials said appointments were filled through Monday. Officials are working to expand capacity.

"I think that lots of gay men in New York have been keeping tabs on it, perhaps closer than our straight counterparts. I think that lots of us had heard stories, maybe a friend of a friend who had gotten monkeypox, and it felt, there was a sense that if we didn't get the vaccine now, especially after we're going to see so many friends this weekend at Pride, that we would eventually get monkeypox," one person waiting for the vaccine told CBS2.

It comes after 30 people in New York City have tested positive for orthopoxvirus, which is presumed to be monkeypox.
