US - New York City mayor & the Health Commissioner say to wear some type of face covering when outside and near others to stop spread of coronavirus -

The mayor said Tuesday all New Yorkers should wear some type of face covering when outside and near others to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The mayor insisted that civilians not use PPE like surgical masks or N95 masks that should be reserved for first responders and medical workers.

The face coverings are intended to prevent the spread of the virus for asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic individuals with the virus, according to Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot.

"The less fancy, the better," she said. Cloth coverings are best, she said, with the best ones covering the nose and mouth.

Cleaning your face covering is simple, she said: hand-wash in soap and water and let dry completely before using again. Barbot suggested having more than one face covering so you can let dry completely before reusing.

Abstract

We identified seasonal human coronaviruses, influenza viruses and rhinoviruses in exhaled breath and coughs of children and adults with acute respiratory illness. Surgical face masks significantly reduced detection of influenza virus RNA in respiratory droplets and coronavirus RNA in aerosols, with a trend toward reduced detection of coronavirus RNA in respiratory droplets. Our results indicate that surgical face masks could prevent transmission of human coronaviruses and influenza viruses from symptomatic individuals.
