Veterinarians are still working to determine the extent of a multi-state outbreak of neurologic equine herpesvirus (EHV-1). The number of horses confirmed or suspected to have EHV-1 remains on the rise, with several states reporting cases. A common point of origin for all the positive horses is the National Cutting Horse Association's (NCHA) Western National Championship competition, held April 28-May 8 in Ogden, Utah...

National Report ? An outbreak of equine herpes virus (EHV-1) continues to spread with at least 29 cases now confirmed in eight Western states.

Various state agriculture departments report that about 400 horses from 29 states attended the National Cutting Horse Association's Western National Championships in Odgen, Utah between April 30-May 8, which is believed to have been the source of the outbreak.

On May 19, Washington officials increased the state's confirmed case count from one to three. Other cases have been confirmed in multiple western states, but taper off north of Texas and further east. As of May 19, the following states, through their state veterinarian's office or agriculture department, have confirmed or suspected equine herpes virus cases:

? Arizona ? One confirmed case;
? California ? 10 confirmed;
? Colorado ? Six confirmed cases; five that attended the NCHA event and one that was in contact with sick horses;
? Idaho ? Two dead, no confirmed cases;
? Montana ? 30-35 horses under observation, no confirmed EHV-1 cases reported;
? Nebraska ? Five farms quarantined, no cases confirmed;
? Nevada ? No confirmed cases;
? New Mexico ? One dead, one suspected and no confirmed cases;
? Oregon ? One confirmed case;
? Texas ? 20 under investigation. The one confirmed case was a horse from New Mexico that was taken to West Texas for treatment.
? Utah ? Five confirmed cases;
? Washington ? Three confirmed cases;
? Wyoming ? No confirmed cases.

Colorado State University, Washington State University and the University of California-Davis all have restricted equine access at their veterinary hospitals in response to the outbreak...

"Already, several horse events have been canceled as a precaution, including a 4H show May 28 at the Jefferson County fairgrounds. The Kitsap County Sheriff's Posse is pulling out of Saturday's Armed Forces Day Parade in Bremerton.

The Washington Cutting Horse Association also canceled its first show of the season, which was scheduled for this weekend."...

MONROE, Wash. -- Horse events are being canceled across the Puget Sound region as fear increases over a highly contagious virus that has now been found in six horses in Washington State.

The Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine confirmed the horses have the Equine Herpes Virus or EHV-1.

The six horses were either among the 34 horses from Washington at a National Cutting Horse Association event early this month in Ogden, Utah....

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? California officials say more horses have contracted a potentially fatal virus which cancelled horse shows around the country in May.

The state Department of Food and Agriculture said Wednesday that several horses in Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Sonoma counties contracted equine herpes virus in the past few weeks...

Pigeon Forge's Dixie Stampede dinner show attraction announced Wednesday that five other horses in its herd have been diagnosed with equine herpesvirus 1.

But these horses so far are responding to treatment and are not showing signs of myeloencephalopathy, the neuropathic illness that struck Sandy Jo, a horse that performed in the show who was euthanized Sept. 16.

About 50 people attended 90-minute informational session on EHV-1 Wednesday evening at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, with at least another 200 logged in to watch a live webcast of it (available at http://www.vet.utk.edu). The last hour was devoted to UT veterinarians answering audience questions about the outbreak at Dixie Stampede, the virus, and the risk to other area horses...
