A sickening superbug spread through infected eye drops that already killed a Brit earlier this month is now infecting dogs in the U.S., with at least two in New Jersey treated within the past year for the rare but deadly, drug-resistant disease.
Both animals reportedly tested positive for carbapenemase-producing carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the type of bacteria found in at least 27 different brands of eye drops that were all recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year after four Americans died.
The bacteria was found in the lungs and ears of two dogs belonging to different owners at an animal hospital in the East Coast state. After testing the strain of the bacteria extracted from the pets, the CDC found it to be "highly genetically related" to the bugs found in the aforementioned outbreak last year, CBS News reported. ...
