...the recent measles case count in Minnesota is now at least 14, which means the United States total is more like 44.

In comparison, last year there were only 4 reports of measles in the U.S. by the beginning of April.

In 2009, the measles case count was also only 4 cases at this point in the year.

Even in 2008, a record year for measles in the U.S., with a total of 140 measles cases for the year, there were only 7 cases at the beginning of April.

If we are one-third of the way to our previous measles record in just the 13th week of the year, what does that mean for the rest of the year?

Keep in mind that as the measles case counts get higher...

The official measles count from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention put us at a total of 42 measles cases for the year so far, including one new case in both California and Texas.

Unofficially, we are likely well above that number though, as many new cases of measles, such as the latest cases from measles outbreaks in Utah, Texas, and Minnesota, haven't been included in the CDC total yet.

The unofficial measles count for 2011 is likely much closer to 50 and either way, we are well above where we usually are this time of year...

Although the risk of measles from international travel is well known, most of the cases so far have been from other countries, such as India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. This is the first case associated with Italy this year.

There were at least three cases of measles that were imported from Italy during the big 2008 measles outbreak in the United States though.

U.S. Measles Cases Hit 15-Year High

So far this year there have been 118 cases of measles reported in the United States.

Now that may not sound like a whole lot, but that makes this the busiest period for measles since 1996, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. In fact, in the last decade, the median number of cases each year has been only 56.

What's going on?

Well, measles in this country is, thank goodness, no longer an established disease that spreads in a sustained way from person to person. Vaccination in the U.S. was the key to eliminating measles as an everyday infection.

Now, the vast majority of U.S. cases are imported: 105, or 89 percent, of the cases covered in the latest report.

That "unusually large number of importations," as the CDC put it, is tied to an increase in measles cases...

Our old nemesis measles is roaring back in the US, with the CDC actually issuing a warning for travelers. Americans visiting other countries are bringing the disease back with them, and places where vaccination rates are low are seeing outbreaks. We?ve had twice as many cases of measles so far in 2011 than we did all year in 2010.

As Seth Mnookin, author of The Panic Virus, points out, it?s interesting how there is a cluster of cases in Minnesota, where antivaxxer Andrew Wakefield and others have been targeting the Somali community. Seth also notes that of the cases we?re seeing here, 89% are from unvaccinated people, and fully 98% of the people hospitalized were unvaccinated. He goes on to show the real financial cost of the disease, on top of the devastating health problems it causes.

When we think about reaching a new record in medicine, we usually expect some major public health achievement, like reductions in birth defects, declines in motor vehicle deaths and pedestrian deaths, or declines in deaths from both heart disease and stroke.

Unfortunately, it seems like this year, we will hit a new record for measles. Of course it won't be the eradication of measles. It will instead be a record year for measles cases, when we aren't even at the mid-way point for the year yet.

Late last week, the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases of the CDC reported that they were aware of 140 confirmed cases of measles so far this year. That ties the record high number of cases in 2008.

Since that report, there have been three new cases in Utah. The Bear River Health Department in Cache County reports that three more people have developed measles after an initial case of measles in an elementary school student at the Greenville Elementary school a few weeks ago.

Our new total for 2011 - 143 cases - will be the most measles cases in the United States since 1996, when there were 508 cases. (If the Utah cases were already in the CDC report, then the next new case will make it a record year for measles.)

The big question now becomes will we pass the 1996 record...

As expected, measles cases continue to rise.

The latest measles outbreaks are in California and Maryland. California is certainly no stranger to measles, this is their 16th case this year, but Maryland hasn't seen a case of measles since 2009.

In California, a 22-year-old woman likely caught measles during a recent trip to China. She could have exposed other people to measles...

...These measles cases, in addition to the recent cases in Vermont and Utah, put us well over the 140 record reached in 2008. The CDC reported a year-to-date record of 118 cases on May 20, the most cases in 15 years for that period of time, and then reported they were aware of 140 cases on June 3. With 5 or 6 new cases since then, we are well ahead of the 2008 case count, with several months to go in a typical active measles season.

The big question now becomes will be reach the last big record - 508 cases in 1996?

Get Educated. Get Vaccinated. Stop the Measles Outbreaks.

Docs Find Rise in Measles Cases a 'Tragedy'

For many doctors, reports by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing the largest increase in measles cases in almost 20 years is troubling but not surprising.

"This is a tragedy," said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventative medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Only six months into the calendar year, 152 Americans have already been diagnosed with measles ? double the average number of cases in a half-year, and the largest outbreak in nearly two decades, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thirty-five percent of the patients were hospitalized, and nine cases progressed to pneumonia, according to the CDC...

June 23, 2011 ? The United States is experiencing the highest reported number of measles cases since 1996, most of which were acquired during international travel, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in an advisory sent to healthcare professionals yesterday.

From January 1 through June 17 this year, 156 confirmed cases of measles were reported to the CDC. Most cases (136) were associated with importations from measles-endemic countries or countries in which large outbreaks are occurring. The imported cases involved unvaccinated US residents who recently traveled abroad, unvaccinated visitors to the United States, and people linked to these imported cases.

To date, 12 outbreaks (3 or more linked cases) have occurred, accounting for 47% of the 156 cases...

CDC update: U.S. measles cases at highest level since 1996

Measles continues to be on the rise in the United States this year, due mostly to unvaccinated U.S. travelers to countries where measles is common. This increase underscores the ongoing risk of measles importation to the United States and the need for high measles vaccine coverage and rapid response to cases and outbreaks.

From Jan. 1 through July 1, there have been 174 confirmed cases of measles in the United States. This is the highest reported number since 1996...

We haven't heard much about the measles outbreaks in the United States lately.

If that means things are slowing down, that's great news. The last official measles case count number was 174, which is well above the record set in 2008 of 140. And no one wanted to see us approach the next record of 508 set in 1996.

So why is measles slowing down?...

Measles cases at 15 year high in U.S.

There have been 220 cases of measles so far this year in the United States, more than triple the usual 60 to 70 cases per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Europe had more than 26,000 cases reported from January through July of this year, with nine deaths, according to the World Health Organization. So far, no deaths have been reported in the United States this year.

The CDC found of the 220 reported U.S. cases 87% of the people infected didn't get the vaccine, while the other 13% were too young to get it. Most of these cases were people who traveled overseas to Western Europe, Africa or Asia. Even though 91.5% of the U.S. population is immunized, those who are not, are putting themselves and others at risk, says Patsy Stinchfield Director of the Infection Disease Department at Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota.

Two-doses of the measles vaccine is estimated to be 98-99% effective at preventing the disease and provide lifelong immunity. For those who are unvaccinated and exposed to measles, they can be expected to get measles at a rate on the order of 90% or higher, according to the CDC.

Some adults are not vaccinated by choice or because they don't realize they haven't been vaccinated. When it comes to teens and children, 72% aren't immunized because of their parents religious beliefs or personal reasons, according to the CDC...
