Patient in isolation in Honolulu hospital, officials say Ebola a possibility

The Department of Health has confirmed a patient is currently in isolation and undergoing testing in a Honolulu area hospital.
Officials told KHON2 Ebola is a possibility, however the patient has yet to be specifically tested for the virus.
Officials will not provide any details about the patient or symptoms, but confirms the department is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The patient is currently being kept in a regular room and anyone who goes in or out must wear protective gear, officials said.

A patient admitted to a Honolulu hospital was isolated because of the possibility that the person may have contracted the Ebola virus, a state Department of Health official confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo declined to provide details about the identify of the patient or which hospital the person is staying, citing federal privacy laws.

But she cautioned against panic or alarm.

Okubo said it is her understanding that the hospital was following U.S. Centers for Disease Control guidelines for individuals who may have traveled to the West Africa region in the last 21 days and experienced certain symptoms.

The patient's evaluation is in the preliminary stages, Okubo said, noting that an Ebola lab test has yet to be administered.

?It?s very possible that they do? have Ebola,? Dr. Viray said. ?I think it?s also more likely that they have another condition that presents with similar symptoms.?

Dr. Viray said the patient could have a number of illnesses including Ebola, flu, malaria and typhoid.

I've never known a physician to delay ordering a test when there is the potential of a deadly disease. There is more to this story.

I've never known a physician to delay ordering a test when there is the potential of a deadly disease. There is more to this story.

That bit caught my eye too but assumed it meant they have taken blood but it has yet to undergo lab testing or at least they haven't yet got any results.

Separately on Wednesday, citing a "heightened sense of awareness of Ebola", the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, said it was treating a patient in isolation.

"At this time the patient's history and clinical presentation do not appear to be consistent with Ebola and the patient may be diagnosed with a number of conditions other than Ebola," the statement said.

The rest of the story is that public awareness of an emerging Ebola infection in Hawaii could badly impact the state's tourist economy.

Hawaiian Mike Rivero frequently comments on the state's weakening tourist business and has this reaction to the NON-TEST issue regarding the isolated patient:

"So ... basically they are saying they are not going to bother testing him. I would frankly feel better if they had gone ahead with the test and had it come back negative.

Frankly, this feels like pure political (BS) to protect Hawaii's tourism industry. The first reports on this patient indicated that his doctors felt he met the criteria, including travel.

And, claiming that he has not traveled to Ebola infected areas assumes one knows all the places where Ebola is right now, which is impossible. Prior to the first of this week, one would not have seen Dallas or Brussels on the list of locations where Ebola infection is possible.

Now it is being reported that Thomas Duncan lied to authorities in Liberia to board the aircraft, denying he had come in contact with an Ebola patient. The Hawaii State Department of Health is betting the lives of our citizens that the patient at Queen's has been fully truthful."

No travel history? Why didn't they know that yesterday?

Or was the patient so ill as to be unable to get a history from at all? If the man was unconscious and hemorrhaging, perhaps they isolated him as a precaution without even knowing the history?

That would explain why they didn't test yesterday, though.

HONOLULU ?"It is not a case of Ebola, and we're very happy to let people know that," said state health director Linda Rosen.

Rosen says the patient at Queen's Medical Center is scheduled to be released on Thursday. She would not say what the ailment was -- only that the patient is not ill and, notably, not a danger to the community.

Rosen gives little information about the case, except to say that the patient had traveled recently to Africa and was feeling ill. That person called a health care provider who contacted the Queen's Medical Center.

Rosen says Queen's did everything according to protocol to keep everyone safe.

Department of Health investigators were able to determine that based on where the person traveled and that person's symptoms, the patient did not have the Ebola virus. But, Rosen calls it a good practice run for Hawaii.

"There are many risks for infectious diseases in Africa, so we will have people who travel to Africa who have fever who do not have Ebola, but it's definitely going to happen. We have to consider Ebola and go through our process," said Rosen.
