Date: 19/04/06
Biotechnology company Biota Holdings Ltd says the United States Department of Defence has ordered more than $US5 million worth of its influenza drug Relenza.
Biota, which licences Relenza to global pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), said the US government awarded GSK a $US5.2 million ($A7.01 million) contract to supply packs of the antiviral drug to its army, navy, Airforce and marine corps.
The Melbourne-based company receives a royalty of seven per cent on all Relenza sales by GSK.
Last month, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ordered 2.2 million courses of Relenza from GSK in addition to the 1.75 million courses already ordered.
The US government has been stockpiling antiviral drugs for use in the event of a potential influenza pandemic.
Biota said the Australian, French and German governments are also stockpiling Relenza in case of outbreak of avian flu.
The US has already gathered 5.5 million courses of antiviral drugs, including a rival drug - Tamiflu - made by rival Roche.
At 1142 AEST Wednesday, Biota shares rose 4.5 cents, or 2.71 per cent, to $1.705.
