Experts in Shantou have good communications with the experts in HK - remember the 2005 flap over Yi Guan's article on migratory birds spreading H5N1?

Just think of the opportunity this could be for China. Imagine the respect, status, and leadership they could realize if they were to give the world a head's up on any easily-transmissable influenza. If the world could get a 3-4 month jump on an appropriate vaccine, THAT would clearly earn China incredible respect from the world community.

I think they are having a hard time trying to hide anymore,or deny it.They just might try to save face with a late announcement.:(

The next danger period is December 2006 thru March 2007.

That is a statement I took from a Chinese report on the bird flu.
I think it came from a post on this forum. And I never noted the article it came from, unfortunately.

I have been adding to my own preps based on that time frame.
Three weeks...:eek:
I'd rather it be three years from now.

I suspect that approach will be used by many countries when the early cases show up .... and we still can't say which county will get to face that issue first.

And my neighbor, one of the senior mgrs for a rich beyond Croesus private school nearby says, after I tell him about the water district issues, and the State Dept memo, "I know where there's water. And, anyway, I'll take my chances about bird flu. That warning is for people overseas."

This person holds an advanced degree in SCIENCE. Do I care? Nope.

The 'American Citizens Services Newsletter' issued by the Hong Kong/Macau U.S. Consulate seems to be an irregular publication sent out (electronically only?) to U.S. citizens living there. On their website, there are also other 'special' announcements (like this flu one) that seem to pop up whenever there is some news or advisory the Consulate wishes to pass on to Americans:

In some countries (e.g., Indonesia) you sign up with your email. They are on an "as needed" basis.

Yeah -- I've been wondering if 60,000 U.S. citizens were actually notified with this prep message, or if that number has been inferred by the journalists (is 60,000 roughly the number of Americans in Hong Kong & Macau?). Does the consulate really send out this newsletter to all registered U.S. citizens in those 2 cities (either via email and/or snail mail) -- or do they (as well as post it on their board) only send an email to those people who have given them their email?

I guess one could say that the 60,000 U.S. citizens have been notified since the info has been put up on their website -- but that doesn't mean 60,000 have really seen the info.

When my sis lived in Jakarta, Warden messages went to her personal email. Funny thing - she still gets them (same email, thru Indo ISP) even through she's moved out of INdo. However, she still does business there & maintains Indo websites.

The advisory now suggests prepping for two weeks rather than twelve....

The cable's main intent was to provide guidance to all staff regarding "shelter-in-place". That is, in the event of severe pandemic influenza with high morbidity, the public may be advised to self-quarantine. Therefore, current guidance notes that families should be prepared to "shelter-in-place" for up to twelve weeks, and maintain sufficient food and water supplies to accommodate that entire period.
