US - Beef prices out of reach for 99% ers - January 2015

I was shocked to see the beef prices at the local grocery store on Friday.

Every 2 weeks when we get paid I like to get a treat of a mid-grade steak to cook for breakfast in the weekend. The package is about $10.00 and makes a nice breakfast and a steak sandwich for later in the day. I was shocked to see the price this week - over $17 dollars. I put the package back in the rack. Then I looked at all of the other beef, including "cheap" hamburger. It was all outrageous. In a discussion with my family we decided we are going "beefless".

We can't afford it - even with lower gas prices.

We are middle class so I am guessing many other families are also looking at these beef prices and making other protein choices. But really....fish is very expensive and so are fresh fruits and vegetables. So I am not sure what we are doing.....

Beef prices hit all-time high

By Michelle Linn

Beef prices are skyrocketing.

This Consumer Price Index Chart, found on the Department of Labor website, shows beef prices went up every month in 2014, and FOX23 learned they are on track to continue climbing in 2015.

To get answers about what is driving beef prices so high, we reached out to OSU livestock economist Dr. Derrell Peel.
He says the U.S. cattle inventory is at its lowest level since 1951.
The industry is just starting to come back from three years of devastating drought.
Dr. Peel says many producers were forced to sell off cattle, when they could not afford to feed them, in 2011.
He says it will likely take years to recover.

Since we are a one income family (not me lol), and like most families live paycheck to paycheck, we are looking at the following sources for protein: tuna, eggs, chicken breasts, frozen wild salmon (cheaper than fresh), and peanut butter. I am really hoping that the current spread of HP H5N8 and H5N2 does not reach Georgia, Arkansas, and Alabama because they are the top producers of chicken for the US. Any large outbreak in these states would have an impact on supply and cause prices to increase.

We are also looking some vegetable proteins to see which are the easiest to grow.
