A total of 16 Quarter Horses across three states, all trained by Heath Taylor, have tested positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), reports the Equine Disease Communications Center. Seven in California were euthanized, eight tested positive in Texas (of which six have been confirmed as euthanized), and one more tested positive in New Mexico.

The news first broke last Thursday, when the California Horse Racing Board issued an advisory that seven horses stabled at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif., were ordered euthanized by the California Department of Food and Agriculture after contracting the disease. Additional deaths (six at Lone Star Park) were reported on Friday.

The United States Depart of Agriculture's notice on the EDCC website states: "Additional exposed horses have been identified and are in the process of being tested in multiple states. The current epidemiological investigation indicates that spread of EIA among these horses occurred by iatrogenic transmission."

Iatrogenic transmission refers to the "unintentional spread of disease or problems through medical treatment or diagnostic procedures," according to pubmed.gov...
