Updated 1/2016: FluTrackers Policy A/H1N1 Vaccine Selection for Northern Hemisphere 2011 - 2012

sharon sanders

Editor-in-Chief & President
We feel this year the same as we felt last year here.

We want the most recent and prevalent A/H1N1 strain to be selected for use in vaccine production for the Northern Hemisphere 2011-2012 flu season.

We note the following data in our recommendation:

Trivalent influenza vaccine only 46% effective in 2010-2011 season - UK mid-season analysis 2010/11 - Eurosurveillance

Effectiveness of seasonal 2010/11 and pandemic influenza A(H1N1)2009 vaccines in preventing influenza infection in the United Kingdom: mid-season analysis 2010/11 (Euro Surveill., abstract, edited)

Greatly reduced effectiveness of current A/H1N1 vaccine. Snip from abstract:

"The adjusted vaccine effectiveness was 34% (95% CI: -10 - 60%) if vaccinated only with monovalent vaccine in the 2009/10 season; 46% (95% CI: 7 - 69%) if vaccinated only with trivalent influenza vaccine in the 2010/11 season and 63% (95% CI: 37 - 78%) if vaccinated in both seasons."

Same H1N1 strain for Fall 2016 Northern Hemisphere flu vaccine component:

Recommended composition of influenza virus vaccines for use in the 2015-2016 northern hemisphere influenza season

26 February 2015

It is recommended that trivalent vaccines for use in the 2015-2016 influenza season (northern hemisphere winter) contain the following:
  • an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
