Acute diarrhoea hits An Giang
<script type="text/javascript"> if (196432 <= 194673) $("#pTitle").css("display", "none"); </script> HA NOI ? Forty-five people were hospitalised for acute diarrhoea last week in An Phu General Hospital, An Giang Province, seven of whom tested positive for the vibrio cholera bacteria, according to a Ministry of Health report on Friday.
Director of the Preventive Medicine and Environment Department under the ministry Nguyen Huy Nga said that the seven patients who tested positive were from Cambodia. They came to Viet Nam for treatment after suffering from acute diarrhoea, he said.
The ministry asked the provincial health department to inspect, monitor and decontaminate areas with a suspected outbreak and to disseminate information about disease prevention measures to the people in An Giang Province.
Last week the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported an outbreak of Avian Influenza H5N1 in five communes and wards in Cam Xuyen and Thach Ha districts, and Ha Tinh City. A number of people who had been in contact with dead poultry went to hospital after suffering from respiratory difficulties.
Nga said that all seven of the patients who were evaluated for A/H5N1 in Ha Tinh City tested negative.
The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology reported one more swine flu fatality. The patient was a 31-year-old man from Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province.
The man had been living with HIV and tuberculosis since March 2003. He died on January 24 due to combined complications from the A/H1N1 flu virus, pneumonia, viscera failure and tuberculosis.
His death marked the 57th A/H1N1 fatality in the country. ? VNS

This article seems to indicate that only seven people went to the hospital with symptoms, not 38 as in the previous post.

Perhaps 38 were mildly ill, but only seven had close enough contact to the birds to merit isolation and testing.
