While I appreciate the need to get early data out as quickly as possible I would caution about the over interpretation of the data in this preprint. The crux of my problem with it comes from the timing. The data was collected between the 30th of Nov and the 1st of Jan and the date of publication was the 11th of Jan but I could not see a date for the last collection of case data i.e. how long after detection elapsed before they could be catagorised as either as hospitalised, ICU or dead.
The table below shows the proportion of delta vs omicron cases over the sampling period from which it is clear that there is a significant lag between the bulk of the delta cases and those for omicron.
Given that it takes 2 or 3 weeks to get to a point where patients need ICU admission and another week before they begin to die a few of the delta cases may have had that long but hardly any of the omicron cases. Some of the data is encouraging, when you look at the admissions end of the time spectrum, but without adjustment for the difference of onset dates by strain a direct comparison is not valid as the average onset date for delta is mid Dec but for Omicron 10 days later.
