Unknown disease claims two lives in Tripura

Agartala, Dec 18 : At least two people died of unknown diseases in Shakhan Rang in North Tripura during the past 24 hours in Tripura and the condition of several others was stated to be critical.

Quoting a report, official sources today said the victims were running a fever with severe pain in body and they collapsed within a few hours in the hospital.

Ten people had been admitted to the hospital and another three, who were hospitalised with similar symptoms, were shifted to North Tripura district hospital, sources added...

Tripura has reported over 20,000 malaria cases and 60 fatalities up to September this year, no dengue, no encephalitis, no kala azar, not a single confirmed H1N1 case.

Meningitis outbreaks seem to occur regularly in the region leading to at least 10s of fatalities each year. An old study from 1998 put malnutrition in the region around 55%.

Agartala/The deadly meningococcal meningitis viral disease, which killed more than 60 people earlier this year in Tripura, has returned to the northeastern state and led to more deaths, officials said here Friday.
At least six tribals died due to meningococcal meningitis this week in tribal-dominated Chawmanu areas of northern Tripura, they said.

Shiloh's post #1 says that it doen't seem to be meningitis, but that meningitis vaccination was performed in the area a week prior to the deaths.
